As of June 11, 2014, Move 2014 had begun.
That was the day the packers arrived and packed the boxes, which they were able do in one day — much to our surprise. It started me thinking about our last move in 2011. All I remember of the packing process was leaving my cousin’s wedding early and how huge the moving truck was. But I do remember how sad I was to leave DC and how much fun we had on the road trip.
I remember when Mom first told me we might be moving all the way to California. I was a little shocked and I hoped it wouldn’t happen. I would have to move away from my friends, the house, and the other places I’d grown accustomed to. Not only that, but California was all the way across the country! Meaning it would be harder to see our extended family as often as we used to.
I can honestly say that the trip brought me closer to God, which is a good thing. I loved visiting places like the Rocky Mountains and Zion National Park with my family. I also loved seeing some of the cool things God has made and I do love hiking. My family moves almost every 3-4 years and I have a few memories from our other moves, but not very many.
Every time I tell a non-military friend that we move “so often” they are a little surprised. I’ve always somewhat expected it (at least I do now) and I sometimes forget that not everyone moves as much as we do. I’m glad because — though we do lose stuff — it has allowed us to go places I don’t think we all could have seen otherwise. Had we never moved to California, we may have never gone to Legoland, I may have never gone with my dad on the Queen Mary, and so many other things.
As for participating in the move process, I made — in Photoshop — both the notebook cover and the room signs for this move. I also did the jobs my mom assigned me and helped watch the twins. I even completed a few LEGO Star Wars® levels with my brother and found a few things neither of us had ever found before on the game, which was exciting for both of us.
For me, moving will always be an adventure. Leaving my friends will always be sad and making new ones will always be a challenge, but with today’s technology I can stay in touch with a lot of my friends quite easily.
I can’t wait to make new memories on our upcoming road trip!
