Training our boys to be men is a serious business. All week, my husband and fourteen-year-old son have been building a deck for Grandma. They’ve worked side-by-side, argued very little, and my son is learning all kinds of new skills using a hammer, a drill, a post hole digger and more. It’s been an amazing week. A training week. But we can’t wait until they are fourteen to get started.
That training doesn’t have to be all about work either. For the last few days while big brother has been helping build a deck, my younger boys (when not attempting to help) have been obsessed with one thing: Warfare by Duct Tape. You might have noticed all of my instagram pics coming through on our Facebook page. (Insert cheesy proud Mama grin here).
The reasons my boys are excited about Warfare by Duct Tape are kinda obvious: they get to make something, swing it at people, and those swords and shields are pretty cool right? Boys were made to be warriors, and it shows up pretty early. Let me tell you why I’m excited about the Warfare By Duct Tape books.
1) The books encourage reading.
2) The books encourage following directions.
3) The books are based on actual history.
4) The books are SO COOL.
5) The boys are practicing the heart of a warrior from within the context of family. That’s so important! We want tender warriors, but we do not want them to be afraid of MANHOOD.
6) And oh yeah, they teach teamwork and get kids of all ages playing together.
I’ve got four boys ages 6 to 14 – and all four have swords made from the plans in this book now. Some are still working on their shields, and some have been busy deck building, but they all agree they want more books! We’ve also got the Armor of God Warfare By Duct Tape book waiting for when we finish this one!
