My children absolutely love to draw. One of the things we have had the younger kids do for years is draw a picture of the Bible story each day in a notebook. Notgrass Company has produced a series of books called Draw to Learn which takes that very basic concept to a different level. Still a basic concept, but with some drawing instruction and some Bible instruction thrown in.
It’s art and Bible at the same time, and using the ideas in the front of the book you can even make it a unit study if you enjoy them. I reviewed Draw To Learn Proverbs in physical format ($14.95) and the rest as ebooks ($9.95 each).
Each page of the Draw To Learn book has a Scripture for you or your student to read. I like to read the Scripture out loud with my children as a group, just to make sure they are really getting it. After the Scripture, each page has a huge blank box — the frame. Below the frame, students are given some art instruction related to the verses you have just read.
For instance, for Proverbs 1:10-19, the instructions read “Illustrate verse 16. Take off your shoes, look at your feet, and draw them. Think about the position of your feet..” and then at the end “Decide to keep your feet on the straight and narrow path and to keep them away from the path of sinners.” A little bit of Bible teaching is thrown in too. A short quote from the selected passage is also included on each page, such as “I will keep my feet form the path of sinners.”
The Draw To Learn series really works for all ages, since each person can work at his or her own level. My four-year-old twins draw stick figures and are very proud to share their work with Daddy. On the other hand, my oldest daughter completes elaborate pencil art full of symbolism and technique. Same book, same instructions, very different result.
The Proverbs book has 150 lessons, perfect for a 180 day school year with a little bit of flexibility built in. You could easily combine this with a more in depth study of Proverbs (or whichever Draw To Learn book you choose) for your older students and have the whole family working together on the same Bible study.
I love this idea for large families, and I highly recommend you purchase the ebook version so that you can make copies for your entire family. If your kids are anything like my kids, they are all going to want to have a book of their own. You can print as many copies of the ebook as you like for your personal household and have them spiral bound so each child has a book.
Anna has especially enjoyed using Draw to Learn Proverbs for Bible and art this year. She shares her drawings with me in excitement daily.
My Bottom Line: We enjoyed using Draw To Learn Proverbs for daily Bible study and I love having the entire series in ebook format. I received all five ebooks and a physical copy of Draw To Learn Proverbs. I actually don’t find myself using the physical copy and recommend this book in ebook format if you have more than one child.
