Body butter. It’s a luxurious, thick, moisturizing lotion. What you don’t want is to get a body butter with a lot of added ingredients to rub into your skin. That’s why I thought making my own body butter would be a good idea. This post is part of our DIY Spa Day for Moms essential oil recipe series.
The first thing I had to do was decide on a base. You could use natural coconut oil, which is a very thick cream substance. But I don’t particularly care for the strong coconut smell. And I love the smell of Shea butter – so it was a better choice.
Shea butter can be ordered in raw, un-refined all-natural form on Amazon or purchased in stores like Whole Foods. When you get it, you will notice it is super thick and kinda grainy. It almost feels dry, but when you rub it into your skin, you can see and feel the moisturizing that is taking place.
This recipe is not an exact science, but it works really well. You can substitute any essential oil fragrances you like, and use almond oil, olive oil, or almost any other liquid form of oil in place of the Fractionated Coconut Oil I used.
Here’s what I did.
First, I added about 1/2 cup of raw Shea butter to a bowl. Then I started adding fractionated coconut oil in small amounts and blending the two ingredients. Fractionated coconut oil is in a liquid form and does not have a strong smell. When I got the mixture to a spreadable consistency, I stopped. Then I added the essential oil and blended again. After I got done, I decided I wanted a little bit softer consistency still so I added a tad more fractionated coconut oil. The result is pictured in this post.
Homemade Body Butter Ingredients
1/2 Cup Raw Shea Butter
2-3 Tablespoons of Fractionated Coconut Oil
10 Drops of Red Mandarin Essential Oil
7 Drops of Grapefruit Essential Oil
5 Drops of Lavender Hungary Essential Oil
Homemade Body Butter Instructions
Mix the Shea butter with small amounts of fractionated coconut oil until you get close to the consistency you like. Then add the essential oils – up to 22 drops in the fragrance blend of your choice. After mixing, determine if you need more coconut oil or Shea butter to balance the consistency. Our finished Grapefruit Mandarin Body Butter is stored in a jar with a lid.
A good rule of thumb is to have about 40 drops of essential oil per cup of liquid, so in this case we have a little more than half a cup.
*Test this recipe on the back of your hand or bottom of your foot first to make sure it is not going to be irritating for you. Apply carefully and avoid the eyes.
*All essential oils should be kept away from small children and stored safely.
