When you were growing up, did you have a great deal of freedom to explore? I listen to books like The Sugar Creek Gang with my children now, and I am astonished at how much freedom the children of by-gone eras had. Even I had much more freedom then I feel it is safe to give my own. I think this is has to do with increasing moral decline. Should my own thirteen-year old daughter go traipsing through the woods at Grandma’s house by herself as I did at her age, I would be much more concerned for her safety from men then her safety from snakes, coyotes, and wild dogs. In my youth those were the chief dangers.

Even so, children need to be outside exploring. Last Child in the Woods and A Charlotte Mason Companion are both excellent and completely different books about the benefits of children exploring the great outdoors. As a mom, the big question I have is “How do I get my children exploring outside safely?”

Boys Hiking, Playing in Woods. Kids Outside.

Family Outings:  We are big proponents of the family hike. Trips to the beach, the trails, or the local Civil War battlefields are a chance for your children to explore within the safety of a family  group. Even when I take my children on a walk around the neighborhood I teach them to stop and examine the lizard, observe the hawk, or study a unique flower. October is the perfect month to get outside and explore.

Safety in Numbers:  I am much happier to send my older children outside to explore if they will be in a group. I know this is not a perfect protection but it is much, much safer then exploring alone.

Clothing Safety: These days ticks are a huge threat to children. Lyme disease is epidemic in our area and can be devastating. That’s why kids should wear long pants, socks with shoes, and hats whenever possible if we are going exploring. I’m not the best example of this, my sensory kids wearing long pants on a hot day would mean that hiking never happens. We love to get cheap rain boots for activities like creeking (climbing around in a creek and collecting or examining whatever you find) and rain play.

Cub Scouts:  My oldest son has gotten most of his experience with camping from Cub Scouts. Cub Scout camping is like the perfect blend between family outings and safety in numbers.

Set an Example:  Children imitate their parents. If you are outside enjoying the world God has given us, your children are much more likely to follow suit. If you are sitting on the couch watching television, guess where your children will be? Sometimes your efforts will not come to fruition during their childhood either. My Dad made us garden with him, walk with him and fish with him growing up; but it wasn’t really until we were adults that our love for nature blossomed.

Be Inspired:  Books, art, and the nature journals of real scientists are all excellent sources of inspiration to get your kids up and moving outside. School studies offer a chance to create connections between the outside world of your children and science. Inspiration can work both ways. What you study can inspire you to get outside, and what you see outside can inspire you to study… During our recent study of birds, my six-year-old exclaimed with great excitement:  “Mom, I just saw a bird like that at the beach!”  and “Mom, this bird was on our bird feeder this morning!”

I agree, great post. I just had to quit printing notebook pages so I could answer a request to come “see what’ I’ve been up to in the forest” with my 11 yr old son. We are lucky to have a slice of empty property next door. He has a huge forest to explore on the other side of the street (miles of it) but it is hunting season, so no go. 🙂

I like your suggestion for setting an example. I need to get outside more rather than just ‘send’ my kids outside.

I agree, my friends and I had so much more freedom to explore when we were kids. I remember getting lost in the woods for hours when I was younger. But exploring together as a family, and letting them explore with friends is a good alternative!

See these pretty little plants playing peekaboo? I See these pretty little plants playing peekaboo? I thought they were goners. See, my sister gave us the bulbs for Asiatic Lillies for Christmas last year, down in a bag full of dirt and told us to take them home and plant them in the cold so they would rest and come back next year. Or freeze them. I did neither. I knew we weren’t in our own home yet, and we were hoping to move into our forever home this summer, so I threw them in the closet and waited. They stayed dormant, and started to develop roots in the Spring, still in the bag in my closet. Come June 5, we moved into our new house, and I pulled out the bag around June 15 to plant them and found that the roots were turning to mush. The bulbs were starting to rot. I planted them anyway, but to make matters worse, I accidentally planted them upside down because I thought the roots were actually sprouts. Oops. Then, I hired my boys and their friends to weed the bed where these are planted and forgot to tell them to leave these alone. The “sprouts” disappeared. I thought they were gone forever. Here it is the middle of August, and a week or so ago, I found these baby Asiatic Lillies coming up. I texted a pic to my sis to ask if this was what they look like. Sure enough after all that trauma, this gift survived. I won’t have blooms this year, but I’m told they will come back next year and survive to bloom. What a sweet blessing that will be, God willing. And a sweet reminder to persevere under trials and hardship. God is doing something bigger, something hidden, something better than we can ever imagine. Hang in there! #momlife #momfierce #momforthewin #firmlyplanted
Today I’ve been sorting through some heavy stuff Today I’ve been sorting through some heavy stuff, especially the unmasking of pedophilia and it’s prominence in the US and in our backyards. This horrifies and frightens me. I am so grateful to know that God will prevail. In the end, He wins. Everything seems so dark here in the US and it’s because of the spiritual forces of evil — but I know God will prevail. His love never fails. I’m putting my hope in this truth. #loveneverfails #godwins #godisgreater #momlife #momfierce

There are so many things I need to tell you about There are so many things I need to tell you about this picture. First #sheisloved campaign with @mercyhouseglobal and sheispriceless.org - check that out it’s important. Second - that cute bracelet came from @mercyhouseglobal about a month ago and *didn’t fit*. Today it’s loose enough to twist. I haven’t lost a lot of pounds according to the scale — I kinda stalled out three or four weeks ago at 17 pounds lost — but apparently I’m losing fat. That’s a victory. Third, my hands look like my moms and will some day look like my grandmas. I consider that a blessing. Finally, it’s been a beautiful day😍 but I’m kinda sad it took me this long to find a red marker and share the love. If you have one handy, it’s not too late to jump on board with @wearethatfamily and be a world-changer! #worldchanger #momfierce #prayformoms #especiallyteenmomsinkenya #mymomrocks
