The Choices We Make: Ka’ena Point Hike, Oahu, Hawaii

Life is all about choices. Some choices are easier than others right? Here is a picture where two different paths were available on our way to Ka’ena Point, Oahu on Sunday. We hiked all the way to the point and back — five miles total. It was amazing. But I digress. Which path would you choose?

Every single moment of this hike was beyond beautiful.  We made a round trip hike out to the ocean and back.  Lava rocks of every shape and size surrounded us.  After reaching the ocean, we sat in the water for a while in a section where only those who brave the hike can actually reach the beach at Ka’ena Point Natural Area Reserve.

We were tired and sore, and we knew we had to slog back through the sand and brave the gorge to get back to our car.  I loved every moment of our hike, but certain parts were a challenge for me physically.  We got to one point where we had to choose between walking over a board suspended above a gorge and grabbing onto spikes placed by a thoughtful hiker to pull ourselves up OR attempting to go up and around on a pseudo trail paved by the less courageous.  Going up and over the high trail was easy.  Coming back and down I might have preferred the gorge board.

That’s me choosing higher ground on my way down. See how I’m hugging that rock? Also – notice that my shoulders are burning even though sunscreen was applied. Ouch.

This was a poem I wrote while in Hawaii about a choice we all make.

Like a million diamonds on the waters is the sun upon the sea.

And in that simple beauty, God reveals His majesty.

Is not the whole world sleeping, or is it only me?

How can you push away the knowing in your soul?

Look up, look out and see the power you behold.

God’s power, clearly shown in the rocky lava shoals.

Is not the whole world sleeping, am I the only one who knows?

How can you now deny the proof before your eyes?

As a man before you our Creator died,

What is the use to go your way, believing only lies?

Is not the whole world sleeping, or is it only I?

He is here.

In This Moment.

God is real, and He is here.

God is here.  Knocking at your door.

Look up and bow your knee to Him,

He reigns forevermore.

Diamonds on the Water: A Poem about the evidence of God in creation.
