As we start our new homeschool year or continue our year-round schedule, let’s prepare our hearts and minds for the work ahead!

This word study for homeschool moms will encourage you during this busy season.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance… Galatians 5:22-23

A word study is a great way to learn and to keep you focused, especially in your homeschool.

Encouraging Word Study For Homeschool Moms

  • LOVE

Definition: n. strong affection, kindness, benevolence, charity, esteem, and reverence.

Scripture To Study: Deuteronomy 6:5

Think About It: We must put our words of love into action. How can we love our children this school year? In what ways can we exhibit strong affection, kindness, benevolence, charity, esteem, and reverence in our home? How can we encourage these traits in ourselves and in our children?

Prayer: Lord, please help me to love You and my children with a selfless and unconditional love. Please help me to give my children appropriate affection, do acts of kindness, and give proper respect to all. Please let me be an example of love to my children. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

  • PEACE

Definition: n. a general state of quiet or tranquility, heavenly rest; the happiness of heaven.

Scripture To Study: Isaiah 66:12

Think About It: We must make peace in our home a priority. How can we create and maintain a peaceful atmosphere in our home this year? What steps can we take to ensure that we are resting in the peace found in Christ? How can we make time for resting in the presence of God?

Prayer: Lord, please remind me daily to find my peace and quiet in You. Please help me to turn to Your Word during moments of stress and find rest in You. Help me to point my children to You and Your Word in moments of frustration. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

  • LONGSUFFERING

Definition: n. long endurance, patience.

Scripture To Study: 2 Peter 3:15

Think About It: The days are long, but the years are short! We can’t take them for granted. How can we take each moment as it comes and endure the frustrating times with patience? How can we better prepare ourselves for the year in order to not be burnt out in two months? How can we spend more time just being with our children as ‘Mom’ instead of ‘School Teacher’?

Prayer: Lord, please let me remember that my children need me to enjoy being with them. Help me to remember that it is more important to listen and nurture my children than it is to give instructions and academic tests. Lord, please give me grace and strength for the moment. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

  • GENTLENESS

Definition:, n. softness of manners, tenderness.

Scripture To Study: 2 Samuel 22:36

Think About It: We must remember that ‘more is caught than taught’ and our children need gentle mothers. When and how can we be more gentle with our children? How can we show them a gentle spirit and the tender touch of a mother? How can we change our attitude and our expectations, so that we respond in a soft manner?

Prayer: Lord, help me to respond with a gentle answer instead of reacting with anger. Lord, help me care more about my child’s spirit than a moment of childish behavior. Help me to slow down and consider my thoughts, actions, and words. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

  • GOODNESS

Definition:, n. excellence, virtue.

Scripture To Study: Psalm 21:3

Think About It: As homeschool teachers, we need to be teachable and learn with our children! How can we strive for excellence as mom and teacher? How can we put virtue before our to-do list? How can we focus on what is good and right in our home and family? How can we share the fruits of the spirit with our children?

Prayer: Lord, let my heart be moldable. Lord, help me to seek You and Your goodness. Let me put my calling as homeschool mom in its proper place and pursue excellence in my calling. Help me to give my children forgiveness, just as I need forgiveness from them so often. Lord, help me to see the end goal in this homeschool journey and find joy in the little things. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

It is my hope & prayer that these word studies will give you the desire to delve deeper into God’s Word and depend on Him every day of the new homeschool year!

Those are all wonderful things to contemplate as you set the tone for a new school year. I always found it helpful to think about how I would handle different situations ahead of time. I was less likely to react, and more likely to handle it better. Very encouraging!
