Let’s face it ladies, most of us have a mess of accessories and no clear way to find what we think we need quickly as we throw ourselves together in the morning. I mean, I know I’m not alone. Some days I’m lucky if I can find a clean bra before I have to run out the door with children in tow, let alone an accessory that will add the perfect pop of color or finishing touch to my thrown together outfit.
But there are a few ways to maximize what you already have or maximize what you purchase so that you are making the most of your fashion accessories.
As you collect wardrobe pieces, keep in mind these two mix and match options. Option One is buy neutral clothing and put tons of brilliant color into your fashion accessories. Option Two is focus on brilliant color when you purchase clothes and stock up on neutral, go-with-anything accessories.
What is a Fashion Accessory?
I’ll start by telling you exactly the kinds of things I am discussing in this post. If it adds flair, fun, sparkle, texture, or pop to your outfit, chances are good it’s a fashion accessory and you are making the most of it. Fashion accessories can include shoes, belts, handbags, purses, totes, hats, jewelry, watches, scarves, hair pieces like combs or headbands, socks, leg warmers, gloves, and even coats.
That’s not a comprehensive list, but it gives you a good starting point as you inventory and build your accessory wardrobe.
Making the Most of your Fashion Accessories: Know What you Have
When I type that out, it sounds so incredibly obvious – I’m probably the only person who struggles with this, my brain tells me. Of course you know what you have – you bought it, right? But of course it’s not that simple for all of us. Personally, I forget things. And one of the things I am apt to forget is the necklace that got shoved to the back of the drawer or the pretty sandals buried under all the unused stuff in my closet.
One of the great benefits of accessories is that a smart purchase can remain fashionable and useful for a very, very long time. As long as you don’t forget that it’s there. So the first step in making the most of your fashion accessories is to figure out exactly what you have, piece by piece.
When it Comes to Making the Most of your Fashion Accessories: Group Like Colors Together
The second step will be to sort your accessories collection into two groups: colorful and neutral. You may have these two categories for each type of accessory you own. Colorful earrings, neutral earrings. Colorful scarves, neutral scarves. Colorful shoes, neutral shoes, etc.
If you just found your favorite bright and colorful print dress, you are probably looking for a specific color earring, necklace, or purse to accentuate the outfit. If you have your fashion accessories stored in groups of colorful and neutral, it will make grabbing accessories as you run out the door much easier.
When it Comes to Making the Most of your Fashion Accessories: Less is More
The more choices you have, the harder it is to make a decision and the harder it is to find what you want. Focus on QUALITY not quantity. Just like everyone needs a little black dress, most of us need a red purse or a pink purse or something equally eye-catching to offset the black.
When I talk about quality, I’m not necessarily talking about price. Look for accessories that have good lines, a pleasing appearance, and quality construction. But no matter what you do, don’t buy oodles of stuff you will never wear. Instead, look for that one thing that fits in with the wardrobe you have and makes you smile.

I’m looking forward to Fall as a respite from the heat. We don’t typically have much of a Fall since it stays warm so long, so I focus on pieces that are more transitional, with long sleeves and darker colors but maybe cotton fabric. Or maybe, I’ll find something 3/4 sleeve but a rich color.
