One of my boys LOVES his stuffed animals, including teddy bears. Like, seriously loves them. They have names. They have lives. Throwing one away is like murder. (His words, not mine.) These things are an integral part of his childhood and I try to honor that. Even though what I really want to do is throw them all away but for a few. (BTW: How many stuffed animals can one child stuff into a twin bed and still safely sleep? Just in case I need that information a little later tonight.)

Announcing: Teddy Bear Picnic Day

Teddy bears were invented around 1903, and named after the President of the United States at the time, Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname was Teddy. A funny fact about the invention of teddy bears: TWO people actually invented the teddy bear at the same time, but one lived in the United States, and the other lived all the way across the ocean in Germany! Neither man had any idea that the other had created the same thing, because at the time, it was very hard to talk with someone way across the ocean. So there were actually two first teddy bears!

Early teddy bears may not have been as cute as the ones they make today, but they were so popular that lots of toymakers decided to start making teddy bears after that. By 1906, there were lots and lots of different kinds, and they were very popular. Even adult ladies used to carry their own around, just like little kids, and the president even used one as a mascot! So even a long time ago, teddy bears were very popular, and they are still very popular today!
