I’ve been wanting to make my own bug repellent hard lotion bars forever. Especially since my favorite essential oil supplier now has a kid-safe, neat blend perfect for making DIY bug repellent that kids can use safely. If you also happen to make the hard lotion in fun Star Wars molds just like we did with the Millennium Falcon jelly soaps – they can have fun too!
We live in a very buggy area next to a creek, where mosquitoes are a given. And some of my kids are extra tasty to mosquitoes. What’s up with that? Like one of my boys will get sixty bites while the others get two. So odd.
We discovered a hard lotion bug repellent that we loved, but I also love, love, love the idea of making my own — especially because I can use really cool molds like Han Solo in Carbonite, which helps inspire my kids to actually remember to use the stuff.
The process of making bug repellent hard lotion, or any hard lotion you want, is shockingly simple. You literally melt the ingredients in the microwave, add essential oils, pour it into the molds, and let it set up or freeze it for a fast set. That’s it! When you need bug repellent, just rub it on your bare skin, and it melts a tiny bit and absorbs into your skin as lotion.
So if you want to make Han Solo Bug Repellent Hard Lotion Bars, here’s what you are going to need.
- Han Solo silicon molds
- Microwavable bowl
- 1/2 cup beeswax
- 1/3 cup coconut oil (unrefined)
- 1/2 cup cocoa butter
- 1/2 – 3/4 teaspoon Bug Away neat essential oil blend (about 40-50 drops)
- Soap dye (I used the shimmery silver in this set – which is non-staining btw)
- 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E oil (optional)
- Storage tins (optional) The larger bars are too big for these tins, but you can fit six to eight of the small bars in each tin, and give each child their own lotion bar for fast application.
- Parchment paper (for bars stored in tins)
Once you’ve assembled everything you need, place the beeswax, coconut oil, and cocoa butter in the microwaveable bowl and microwave for about two minutes. Stir to melt any remaining solids. Add the essential oils, vitamin e oil, and soap dye and stir. Pour the mixture into the molds and let it set. It will take about two hours on the counter or ten minutes in the freezer.
Place your finished bug repellent hard lotion bars in tin containers like an empty Altoid tin, wrapped in parchment paper cut to size, or in zipper bags and store away from a heat source or sunlight. The large ones will not fit in a standard size tin, but you can fit up to eight of the little ones in this size and your kids can have individual bug repellent bars to use at your next campfire!
All summer long as your kids are heading out to play, have them rub their necks, arms, shoulders, legs, and ankles with the bug repellent hard lotion bars. You will be shocked at how long these last and how effective they are.
TIP: The soap dye comes in little packets. For a darker grey color in your Han Solo Bug Repellent Hard Lotion Bars, use the entire packet. Its about .1 ounce of mica powder soap dye.
