What makes a complete homeschool curriculum for Kindergarten? I think if you cover basic learning skills like listening, cutting, pasting, and an introduction to reading and writing and letter formation — you are good to go. But if you can throw in some fun that makes it even better — the more fun they have in Kindergarten, the more they will enjoy school long term.

When I opened up Kindergarten Complete (An All-Inclusive Homeschool Curriculum by Debra Arbuthnot) and started looking through it – the first thing I noticed was a fun frog activity in lesson 101. So that’s where we decided to jump in since we were trying the program out in the middle of the year anyway. This is good timing for us since the frogs are coming out at our local pond!

Kindergarten Complete Review

What’s a Kindergarten Complete Lesson Like?

The lesson we worked through is all about Spring. We sang “Rain, Rain Go Away.” We read a book called A to Z Spring. We talked about time and chores, and estimated the time needed to do some basic chores for math and filled out a chart for that. For language arts, we filled out a chart about the changes the boys (twins) have seen from spring in clothing, weather, the landscape, animals, and sports.

They were most excited to report seeing “Hoppy” the squirrel in our backyard again and getting to wear short-sleeves. We wrote it all down. Yes, my boys have named the squirrel in our trees. They think every squirrel they see is the same one!

Then we made some Rain Art — with frogs. The boys love art, and I don’t do enough with them. And this artwork is created with water, so that makes for happy boys. They would play with water all day long if I let them do it.

What comes in Kindergarten Complete:

Kindergarten Complete Second Semester ($119.95) begins with lesson 73 and ends with lesson 144. Each daily lesson includes calendar time, math, language arts, special areas (art, music or physical development), Bible, enrichment, (stories, games, crafts, or experiments) and story time.

Each lesson plan includes thorough directions for each part of the lesson and any necessary worksheets to be completed. Themes in second semester include Feelings, Valentine’s Day, Community Helpers, George Washington, Pets, Creation, St. Patrick’s Day, Spring, Easter, Ducks, Plants, Friends, Solar System, Weather, Safety, Insects, Senses, and Summer.

The appendices include Bible verse lists, handwriting paper, a hundreds chart, literature list, materials list, flashcards, pledges, recipes, rhymes and songs, and more. At the front of the book, (even in the second semester set) the author has included thorough instructions for how to use the material.

My Bottom Line: The boys and I had a lot of fun using Kindergarten Complete. We started in the second semester book and were able to jump right in and start learning. I like how Bible concepts are woven throughout the material.
