When I was about 16 years old, between my junior and senior year of high school, I went to Europe with a choral group to perform on tour. My mom went with me and we had an amazing trip. When we arrived in Brussels, her ankles were extremely swollen (definitely not normal for her at the time). Our guide sent her to a local store to pick up a peppermint foot soak. She soaked her feet in this stuff one time, and the swelling was pretty much gone.
We still talk about that foot soak every once in a while. It really worked so well!
I went to get a pedicure recently, and noticed that the mixture they added to the water to soak my feet at the beginning looked a lot like epsom salts and smelled all pretty.
With those two things in mind (and I can still see her ankles all swollen in my memory!) combined with the fact that my feet just get so tired and sore and rough, I decided to use my newfound love of essential oils to create a peppermint foot soaking recipe that smells delicious and helps me relax too!
Peppermint Mandarin Foot Soak Recipe
Ingredients:
1 Cup Epsom Salts or Magnesium Flakes (they are the same thing)
25 Drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
20 Drops of Red Mandarin Essential Oil
5 Drops of Bergamot Essential Oil
Directions
Place 1 Cup of Epsom Salts in a jar.
Add the essential oils and stir well.
Cover tightly and shake to complete absorption of the oils into the magnesium.
Store covered and use between 3 and 5 Tablespoons in your foot soaking bucket, depending on how much water you use and how strong you want the scent.
Magnesium flakes are softening and excellent for your skin. Peppermint Essential Oil is soothing and promotes relaxation. Red Mandarin Essential Oil is a candy-like citrus oil which can help tone your skin and improve circulation and also promotes relaxation. In addition, Red Mandarin is one of the citrus oils that is *not* photo-toxic, making it a good choice for skin application. Bergamot Essential Oil is a wonderfully calming and soothing oil.
Combined together, these three oils make a wonderfully soothing and relaxing foot soak!
Other Essential Oils Excellent for Foot Soaking
Tea Tree Oil is a natural addition to recipes for your feet – especially if athlete’s foot is an issue.
Lavendar is a very relaxing oil that blends well with peppermint/citrus and could replace the Bergamot.
