Have you made up your mind between RMO vs Young Living or RMO vs DoTerra? I have. I’ve been using some of the best essential oil brands faithfully for six months or so.
You might be surprised to know I am throwing out my essential oils. And you might be wondering “Why would anyone do that?” I’m glad you asked. Let’s chat.
Here’s why I think Essential Oils Work
I rub peppermint oil on an existing wart daily.
Peppermint goes in my diffuser necklace any time I have a headache.
I drip little drops of essential oils on the pillows of my boys to help them sleep.
We even have an essential oil shower routine for when the boys are angry and I add essential oils to personal care products like shampoo and facial cleanser.
What is an Essential Oil?
Essential Oils are all-natural compounds extracted from plants using steam distillation and cold press methods.
I firmly believe essential oils like rosemary, frankincense and tea tree oil are are solving some of my most pressing issues and helping my family.
So why in the world would I be throwing out my essential oils?
I’m glad you asked.
Since the very first time I got an essential oil (Lavender was my first) I have wondered why it had this odd edge to the fragrance that kept it from being entirely pleasant to smell. My lavender essential oil does not smell good! I’m not saying it didn’t help me sleep – but I certainly wasn’t enjoying the fragrance in the process.
Peppermint was the next oil added to my tiny collection. The smell of peppermint I loved.
After this, I added a few more single oils — lemon, tea tree, and Eucalyptus. I didn’t notice any odd edge to the aroma of these oils. So I purchased two or three additional lavender oils in various brands (I really struggle with sleep) and guess what? They were all too off-putting and unpleasant because of that funk on the edge of the fragrance.
That “funky smell” in my essential oils.
Finally, I started purchasing a few blends. I wanted to try the Relax and Tranquility blends for my boys to see if they helped the little ones sleep at night. The reaction I got from them was fascinating. Not one of them enjoyed the smells of the blends I had purchased.
Nor were they willing to have a drop of those oils on their pillow at night. Oh no! They wanted Sweet Orange or Lemon or Peppermint. And unfortunately, those oils are not exactly known for helping someone sleep. As I began to try the blends myself, I noticed that these blends all had a slight “off” edge to the fragrance as well.
What I think about MLM Oils
Now, this was all very interesting, but because I have refused to “sign up” for an MLM company, I only had experience with a few of the best essential oil brands I was able to purchase in stores or directly from the manufacturer. I wanted (and still want) to purchase my essential oils direct.
Personally, I don’t want to pay the higher price for multi-level marketing in which multiple people make a percentage from each sale. Did you know that on MLM purchases often up to four people profit from a sale in addition to company profit?

Young Living. A multi-level marketing company that skyrocketed in growth in spite of the facts. Young Living promotes the idea of a pure therapeutic grade oils for ingesting safely, which is a myth.
DoTerra. Another highly popular MLM with a slightly different structure.
Plant Therapy. Some of my first oils ever came from this company, and while I definitely do not love the lavender, I’m a huge fan of the sweet orange. This company also has great carrier oils and organic oils.
Simply Earth. This little company is newer on the scene but shows good promise with quality control and has some really beautiful products. I’m in love with the car diffuser that hangs on your rearview mirror. Simply Earth donates 13% of proceeds to organizations that work to end human trafficking — I love that.
Eden’s Garden. This one is a faith-based company with a decent selection and a quality promise.
Mountain Rose Herbs. Mountain Rose Herbs carries a large selection of both essential oils and herbs.

Aura Cacia. This brand is available in stores and is largely popular for this reason.
Does Young Living do GC/MS Testing? Really?
I’m getting pushback on this in the comments a lot, so I decided to do more research.
Read what happened when an independent lab tested an unopened bottle of the Young Living Oils here to see another reason I won’t purchase from that company. And why I’m horrified that people still ingest YL oils as if it is no big deal.
After acquiring five Rocky Mountain Essential Oils for myself and comparing those to what I had in my cabinet, I’ve made a decision. All those other essential oils blends in my case are going in the trash. Why keep potentially adulterated oils that kinda stink, and that my family won’t use? Young Living has also gotten in trouble for illegal harvesting of protected species.
What is the Top-Rated Brand of Essential Oils?
There is so much controversy about this and honestly there is no published FDA study or official, trustworthy comparison guide with data to back it up. Every article I found rated one specific company as the best simply because that is the company the website owner works with.
Young Living gets a lot of hype because they have a huge and almost rabid following in their MLM downline. But what really makes a great essential oil company is quality control, and we’ve already talked about how YL does not have that — even as much as they claim to have it.
I’m not going to pretend I don’t work with RMO, but I will tell you that these companies are the ones I would trust to have unadulterated oils: RMO, Plant Therapy, Simply Earth, Eden’s Garden, and Mountain Rose Herbs. While RMO is on that list, it is not the only one and I would never tell you that there is only one.
So Now Which Essential Oil Brand Will You Trust?
Do I really need to keep oils whose ingredients I cannot even identify with any certainty?
Why keep oils that don’t work for what we need?
And even those that were working – if the quality of the blends is not as amazing – what does that say about the quality of the single essential oils?

Which Essential Oils Brands Should You Avoid?
I would definitely steer clear of the knock-off brands found on Amazon, which you can almost always tell have synthetic fillers from the smell. If it smells like perfume, it is not an essential oil.
The names of these oils change all the time, but a quick search on Amazon turned up Lagunamoon, Cliganic, Artizen, Phatoil, Eternal Essence, and more. These are all knock-off brands that are almost certainly adulterated with synthetics.
The Essential Oils I Actually Love
Over the course of a few days, I was also able to try several blends from Rocky Mountain Essential Oils as well. So far, I have used Immune Strength, Deep Breathe, Purify, and Pain Ease.
I love them all! Somehow words cannot express to you how different these blends are in how they smell. You are going to have to experience this for yourself. I can *finally* understand why someone would want to diffuse oils in their home! RMO is definitely one of the best essential oil brands available. Also this E.O. box. Swoon.
This made me start asking questions about how Rocky Mountain Essential Oils are made, and what kind of purity I can expect from the company. Obviously, to me, something makes these oils different.

I am also a consultant for YL and the minimum price per month is $50 which is absolutely not that much money. I know the exact quality that I am getting and they have no added chemicals or fragrances. I have tried several brands including those outlined above and YL was the purest and helped the most. They also have a HUGE variety of beneficial oils. Also you do not have to sign up monthly if you don’t want to it’s a choice. Maybe do some research before you start bashing companies you know nothing about.

several people may be making money from your purchase, but those people are connected to you in one way or another. When my mom buys her oils through me, part of her purchase goes to supporting my family, my cousins family, my brothers family. so instead of spending money on oils in a retail store where the money ends up strictly in the pockets of the corporation, she is supporting families. people with children who are using that income to support their little ones. not to mention, she is getting the highest quality oils. essential oils can be labeled 100% pure but in order to use that label, they are only required to have 5% of the actual essential oil in that bottle. so that bottle off the shelf could contain up to 95% miscellaneous and undisclosed ingredients….fillers, chemicals, additives…whatever. Young Living is the only company that is guaranteed to be 100% therapeutic grade oil. ….nothing else in that bottle except the pure essential oil….distilled and processed in the correct way to ensure they are keeping all the constituents at their highest quality. YL oils are the only oils safe for consumption. you get what you pay for in this situation and i am happy to pay for it. Now imagine that they were not actually an MLM and they were selling oils on the shelf. They would most likely still be just as expensive because without the company relying on their customers to promote and advertise and compensating them to do so, they would then have to do marketing and advertising which would then contribute to the price of the oil. so would you rather all the profits go to the company? or have part of the profits going to people you care about? i understand the resistance to MLM’s because they carry a negative association because most of them do their business in a most unattractive way. I never thought i would be a part of one. here i am doing YL because you don’t have to sell. the products sell themselves. ive never once reached out to a single person to try and talk them into buying anything. people see the success i have with the oils and they approach me to get their own. and only 5 months into the biz side of things and i am already making enough to cover our mortgage, on top of covering the oils i choose to buy each month. say what you will but these oils have made our family healthier, happier and are now securing our financial freedom.

I just read an article about YL last week that their ‘own farms’ & ‘seed to seal’ guarantee had to be altered because it was not true. It did indicate that they could not keep up with demand & had to contract other farms. How long this had been going on it did not say but long enough to get the Co. & Gary Young in trouble. Yes I am well aware that Young Living has gotten into trouble recently for adulterating oils, lying about “seed to seal” and purchasing oils illegally. Thank you for backing me up in the comments.
I am late to this party but I wanted to gift my daughter some EOs. I don’t know anything about it all so I stopped at a YL farm while traveling by.
I had to be a consultant to visit their farm. So I wouldn’t say *anyone* can visit. I think I’m going with RMO, it’s seems less dazzle and more information.
I will add, that never before have I heard so much anger and bashing except by these MLM people.
I’m studying essential oils now, it’s a 400 hour class before you can sit for the certification test. We are taught about how to find a good grade of oil, but no where do they insist on any particular brand. One of the most interesting things I’ve learned right off the bat, is that the term “Therapeutic grade” is just a marketing term created by MLMs and sometimes parroted by other companies. Also, when speaking to those who use YL or Doterra oils, I’m amazed at how many are unaware of the contraindications of any particular oil.
I just had this conversation with someone who made it her goal to point out that only YL, let’s you your their farms. I just assume the reason they don’t all do that is because not all run their business like Disneyland. O have been curious too, how they can grow certain plants in Utah, that are not indigenous to the USA but, I’ll investigate when I’m bored.

Bottom line, to all you MLM fans, good for you if you like the product. Use it. But stop bashing others for their opinions. Oils are to be respected, as are old school teachers who are steeped in their use, long before The MLMs were thought of.
Yes. They are a fraud. I use doterra but am now going to compare their prices with Rocky and if cheaper. H ey, guess what? I’ll switch. It shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg to buy healthy oroducts or non GMO foods. I’m all about all natural at a bargain!!
I use to use DoTerra and then Young Living. Rocky Mountain is quite a bit cheaper because they are not an MLM business and don’t have to pay a seller a percentage of your product price. And the free shipping is huge! You won’t regret the switch!
You did not bash Young Living. Don’t sweat it. Whenever you promote Rocky Mountain, YL sellers get angry and come for you. I’ve seen it all over the internet. Which makes my decision to leave them even more rock solid. Some of them attack you and are so nasty. They make a lot of money in that MLM and don’t want any other oil company to succeed and threaten their business. For me, the “proof was in the pudding”. Rocky Mountain oils have given me better results than YL. And I love the free shipping for even just one oil! The RM Immunity Blend has kept me flu and cold free for the last two years! Thieves from YL never was able to achieve that for me. And, THAT is not bashing. I’m stating facts.
I also am a member of Young Living. I have never been forced to purchase. IF you do essential rewards, which has amazing benefits, then yes you have to purchase $50 a month in product. I will always stand by Young Living, the are therapeutic grade, 100% pure. Everyone has their opinion though.
I’m curious if you’ve ever asked Young Living to provide their 3rd party GC/MS testing to prove they are pure. Because there have been aromatherapists do blind chemical studies with 3rd party testers who have proven they aren’t always.
Even if they are usually (and I’m sure they probably are), it doesn’t negate the fact that YL is not the be all, end all of essential oils. There are SO MANY companies selling pure essential oils.
And P.S. did you know there is no such distinction in aromatherapy as “therapeutic” grade. That is a made up marketing term coined coincidentally by Gary Young.
Yes, you can get the test results if you ask for them. YL is not the only one, but I do believe they are the purest and best.
They do purchase from other farms, but those farms need to meet the seed to seal standards, which is raising the quality for the entire industry. They own some, partner with others.
Yes Seed to Seal was expanded to be more clear, but not because they were “caught”, but because YL is transparent.
Therapeutic grade was a term created by Gary Young, I’ve heard him say it. He created it because YL was the only company providing 100% pure oils 25 years ago. Other companies started using the term to try to compete and indicate they were the same quality.
If we’re going to start throwing out “Did you know”s…DYK how doTerra started? Execs left YL, stole formulae and started a new company because YL wouldn’t compromise their quality to keep from oils going out of stock.
Don’t believe everything you read…people come for YL and try to discredit them because they actually are the best. IMHO
Actually, they left YL because they were disgusted with their dishonest practices. They did not steal formula’s and those who made that up could not back up the claim with proof. Don’t believe everything YOU read.

They say their oil is 100% pure and grade therapeutic but never prove it. They also went it court with DoTerra and only Doterra can prove it. You can track every single bottle. It’s not more expensive because you need less oils to do your recepies in the diffusor or roll on. I would never buy Young Living. I smell it once and it’s nothing compared to DoTerra.
In my opinion there is enough room in the world for many quality oils companies. So I think we should all grow up and not bash the ones you are choosing not to use!!
I understand the hesitancy of many to join MLM but it doesn’t mean you should bash it!! Every company has a thread of people making many on the product. I think MLM is amazing in that it allows especially women to supplement their families income while staying at home with their children.
It’s time we appreciate our differences and encourage rather than bash. That goes to MLM and non MLM.

Yes there is plenty of room for all sorts of EO companies. However, we demand truth and purity. Why is that too much to ask? We are using the oils for our health! I want to know EXACTLY what I’m putting in and on my body. I want to know what I’m inhaling. I’m certainly not going to purchase anything from a company who’s been caught being dishonest. What else have they lied about that they haven’t been caught for?

There is definitely a difference in certain brands. I’ve found that I am super picky, and I just don’t like most Lavenders. I love the Lavender Hungary from RMO and am so relieved to have found it!
I began using Native American Nutritionals and then Rocky Mountain Oils after I realized they are the same company now. I LOVE the Tranquility blend and use it in my bedside diffuser all the time. It is my absolute favorite. I have not been disappointed in any thing I have purchased. I understand that they are natural scents and not all “perfumey” like I think some people think there are supposed to be. I agree that after learning some information about sources and how they are processed, RMO and NAN are the way to go. Now free shipping also!!! Shut the front door. I don’t think I would ever even try anything else. They are wonderful. ” I use my oils for all kinds of things. I don’t even purchase household cleaners at the store any more. When I first began using Essential oils over 5 years ago, I thoroughly researched the marketplace before finally deciding to purchase my oils from Native American Nutritionals. Once they merged with RMO, I continued to buy several refills, but I found a better alternative. A French Company called Florihana. The Certification Authority for Essential Oils over in Europe is very Strict and far superior than what he have here in the USA. Florihana has excellent prices, and you can purchase them through Healthytraditions aka TropicalTraditions .com
I also have been purchasing Florihana oils. They are wonderful, and I love their beautiful packaging. There’s at least a double handful of companies out there that can be trusted without needing to go the MLM route.
Agreed. There are other options just as good. But when you speak out against YL, in particular, you get attached and they do get nasty. I’ve had so many really, really horrid private messages from YL sellers. Everyone needs to realize that people have choices and we choose what is BEST for US. We should not attack each other’s decisions.
Ooh! I love tropical traditions. I would trust their oils. I’ll have to check them out. I use a couple of RMO but mostly YL. I’ve found them to work better and after 5 years finally decided to stick with them. RMO is a great company. I just realized I had to use more to get the same effect. I promise I don’t care what company people buy from. I just want people to know EOS work for everything (even serious stuff!).
I’ve recently discovered RMO, read as much as I could find on them and then ordered two products. I did notice that when checking out the ingredients of the oils/blends you MUST pay attention to the last words ‘in a base of ??% fractionated’ {carrier} oil or ‘neat’. I chatted with a rep and he explained it completely. I ordered the Flu Time neat because I wanted full strength. I also ordered the Immune Strength as a comparison to YL Thieves and while I don’t believe the odor is as strong I’m excited to use it.
I’m excited about RMO because I believe they have excellent oils and don’t have to order a certain monthly amount like I did as a member with ERs and the prices are way much better so I can easily build my supply.

I’d love to hear (if even off the record) what oils you were using before. I’ve used them for a few years, but not a ton. Originally tried them for allergies, use for cleaning, diffusing and relaxing / sleeping now. I have always used Plant Therapy oils and I love how they are up front with their testing results, and have even pulled batches, reworking their oils and processes based on those non-biased reports. I have also heard great things about the Rocky Mountain company, so I’m glad to see another good review of them!!
I just realized in the picture you have Plant Therapy oils….didn’t see that when I originally posted. I was very impressed to see their quality reports didn’t make theirs necessarily the best and they addressed all the negative reports. I do know a few people who want their essential oils to smell like the candles they buy, and that’s just not the case. I never noticed an after smell or anything “off”. I will have to try Rocky Mountain next time to see the difference!
Actually you can see them in the trash can in my image. 🙂 I threw out some Plant Therapy oils – specifically the Lavender and the blends that I had. I also threw out some Aura Cacia from Whole Foods, and some random brand I got on Amazon that was the most horrible quality. The jar is backwards and you can’t see the label and honestly I don’t remember for sure on that one in particular. But the Plant Therapy lavendar and blends were the ones myself and my boys just could not stand. I kept the peppermint, lemon, and sweet orange and will use them up or give them away. I love that Rocky Mountain Oils now includes GC/MS data for every batch so you can see exactly what is in your specific oils that you purchase. It’s a wonderful quality control they have put into place.
The backwards one is Ovvio. I recognize it because I tried them, too. Not impressed, but I love RMO, too! I actually do like most of what I’ve used from Plant Therapy as well.

RMO is always cheaper than YL. I buy both; I prefer the YL blends because they are slightly differently mixed, but for single oils I usually go RMO. Especially because RMO has free shipping (on everything) that is wayyyy faster than YL’s $6 shipping.

Most other reputable companies do not have a vitality/internal use line of oils because overall the recommendation is NOT to use oils internally unless under the care of a trained professional (not a financially motivated distributor, well intentioned as he/she may be). Young Living markets theirs in a way that definitely causes a lot of turn over and repeated purchasing from people using them in water/etc but there is concern in the greater essential oil community as to whether or not this is safe, especially for our gut biome, for people on various medications or with different conditions using them in such high frequency. It is the potency of the oils, not just the purity that is concerning. This is a hot topic and everyone should do their own research and come to the conclusion they are comfortable with for themselves and their families (especially children!). We’ve been using Native American – now RMO – for several years. No problems and the oils seem to be high quality. We also have wonderful success with NOW products, which we purchase locally. The one MLM product we do use is doTerra’s Past Tense blend. It’s an instant reliever for my TMJ headaches. Comparable blends by other companies just don’t do the trick.
I love the YL oils, but I’m not crazy about the MLM side of things. I hate feeling like I have to order X amount of stuff (whether I need it or not) every month.
You can just sign up to be a retail customer and only buy what you want. I used to use RMO. I now use YL. I like the RMO oils, but YL would be my pick since I tried them.

I love Aligning from NAN (same company as RMO) . It really helps with back pain, it doesn’t make the pain completely go away, but it definitely reduces the pain by a lot. And when using the oil I don’t have to take handfuls of pain meds on really bad days! I love that NAN oils are top quality AND super affordable! I also use tea tree oil for cold sores, gets rid of them faster then over the counter meds OR prescription medicine!
The two companies have merged now, but Rocky Mountain Oils have carried forward the excellent quality and still carry Aligning!
Please tell me more about this oil for back pain. Do u use it topically, orally or both? Do u have nerve pain in your back? If so, does it work for pain that travels down from spine to legs and butt. I m so excited that there may be something besides opioid type medicine. This oil u speak has the only 1 brand worked for the pain? How much and how often do u use/take it? I love this post!! MLM brands are giving oils a horrible name – they just don’t work! I was introduced to oils using a non MLM brand. I LOVE them. Then in a pinch(I am great at running out and not having tome to wait for shipping :-/) I bought some non MLM mainstream brand that seems to be everywhere, and was amazed that the peppermint smelled like a candy cane. NOT a peppermint leaf. It made no sense to me. Not only did it smell fake but it didn’t work! I have gotten samples of a few MLM brands and they all have a similar smell – no matter what oil it is, it has a similar after smell. I used to suffer from chronic headaches – now I keep a bottle of my own blend in my purse and within a minute my headache is gone. Ran out of one of the oils one time and replaced it with a friends MLM – my headache wouldn’t go away when I used it. That was the last time I have ever touched any other brand and am sticking to what I know work! Thanks for sharing your story!

I have one that is 20 drops peppermint, 15 lavender, 15 frankincense , 15 eucalyptus and 5 ylang ylang and sweet almond oil.
I am going to try a peppermint only blend and a reduced version of the one I have with 5 drops or less of everything,but peppermint as well. I seem tonhave more success with low/single blends

I started out with DoTerra oils but it was getting a little costly. I stumbled upon Rocky Mountain Oils and I love them. The cost is better too.
I am with an mlm brand now and I love the oils and they are working great for us. However I dislike having to place an order each month especially when $ is tight. My question is…are the rmo oils 100% pure or do they have other ingredients mixed in?
They are absolutely pure, and actually publish the chemistry of each oil on their site from an independent lab.
Pure in the sense they can be ingested?
As pure or more pure than any other essential oil out there – look at the chem data available on the site. I personally do not recommend ingesting ANY essential oil. That goes against the grain of most, but that is my personal recommendation based on what I have read and experienced.
Doesn’t Plant Therapy publish the chemistry of each oil on their site too?
I believe that might be true now, but at the time this article was written, RMO was the first and only company to do so.
I used to purchase from NAN & RMO before and after the merger. I never saw any GC/MS reports back then (as late as 2013) but I glad to hear they are now doing them and using a reputable lab.
There are other companies such as Aromatics International, Stillpoint Aromatics, Florihana, etc. that have posted batch specific GC/MS on their website for many, many years before RMO, Plant Therapy, etc. as they are suppliers for professional aromatherapists who use them as a valuable tool in their practice. Once I discovered these other companies that are also owned and operated by highly regarded professional aromatherapist, I never looked back. The quality and results I get is quite remarkable.
Large on-line retailers moved to finally posting reports in response to customer requests after groups of informed essential oil users and professionals started revealing the test results of adulterated essential oils from popular brands and it is now become the norm for companies to post for consumer confidence which is a great thing….even is the everyday consumer does not know how to interpret the report..
Yes they do. I’ve been using their oils for 4 years, and the info has always been provided. I also love that they have certified aromatherapists who are always willing to help/answer any questions you may have. I absolutely love Plant Therapy!
I’m with you there. Plant Therapy is my absolute favorite and my kids always pick them over RMO and DoTerra oils. We’ll be sticking with that company for now.
I just tried my first RMO, Calming. I love it in small rooms, but while I used to put 2-3 drops in my diffuser for an entire room with YL oils, I know use 5-6. I’m not an MLM fan either, but have you experienced this?
I obviously can’t spell. 2-3 drops for YL Peace and Calming, 5-6 for RMO.
I know this is old and I’m not sure you will see this reply. The reason that YL has less drops is because the orifice is bigger.

I did a lot of research before deciding from which company I’d be purchasing my essential oils. I settled on Rocky Mountain as well and have been completely satisfied with my choice. And you are right! Because their oils are so well sourced, the do smell different – and better! – than oils I had previously purchased from other companies. I threw all my other oils away as well and am a faithful customer.
I am not a huge oil user but I bought a starter kit from Young Living a year or two ago and I found that I only really liked 2-3 of them. My favorite was the Stress Away from Young Living Oils – do you know if Rocky Mountain has anything that compares to that blend? I stopped ordering the YL because of the high prices and commitments that you mentioned, but I really miss a couple of the blends… I’d love to find something that was similar.

I am also new to the world of essential oils. I don’t recall if it was the RMO or Plant Therapy website, but one of them mentioned the oil companies don’t generally say they are safe to ingest as someone may attempt to drink an entire bottle of EO. They also said a drop in a glass of water probably won’t hurt you. But, every body is different, so use your best judgement.
I had never heard of Rocky Mountain. I have friends who do DoTerra and Young Living. I had researched those 2 companies, and between them, YL seemed superior. They are cheaper, and if you buy the kit, you don’t have to sign up to buy something every month, just buy a few things a year to keep getting the discount, at least from what I was told. I just purchased the kit and will be getting it later this week from YL. My mother-in-law told me about RMO, that she and some of her family ordered from them, and so I have decided to research for myself. I do not regret getting the kit from YL, because even if I don’t purchase anything else from them, it’s an amazing price to get the diffuser, 11 oils, and a few other goodies for that price. It’s definitely an awesome starting point for me in my oily journey. However, if I could get oils that I know would be quality but a bit less, I am all for that. I like the idea of free shipping. I am not sure what the price is if I want to order single oils from YL, since I only ordered the kit (shipping started at $6.99 for the kit), but free shipping is good. I saw that one of the RMO oils I was looking at said it had coconut oil in it. So are they perhaps more dilluted than YL? I am still new to the whole oil thing, so I am just not sure how it all works still. Trying to find unbiased reviews is tricky.
Erica, YL was my first experience with EO’s and I signed up just to be able to purchase at the distributor rate. I dislike the $ burden of the MLM model but truly appreciated learning about oils and their uses from my up-lines. Shortly afterwards I found NAN (Native American Nutritionals) and Rocky Mountain Oils (RMO). I’ve been using their products for about 4 years and have been very impressed with the quality which certainly is in line with YL and DoTerra without the increased costs associated with the MLM model. NAN merged with RMO a couple years. In my EO journey I also discovered and buy from another very reputable company called Ananda Apothecary. Their oils are also 100% pure therapeutic and they offer other oils and sizes (smaller and larger ml bottles) not carried by RMO. There site is loaded with education and contains detailed information about each oil and the blends. The coconut oil you mentioned is a typical ingredient in many blends. I am guessing that these probably shouldn’t be ingested. All on-line companies are under threat by the FDA. The information they provide might be considered as giving medical advice and therefore most will not tell you outright that they can be ingested out of fear. Pathetic but true. Anyway, my experience to date is that you can purchase with confidence from either RMO or Ananda Apothecary as their oils are comparable to YL and DT. Good luck on your journey.
I have a friend who is a rep for YL. I bought 3 single oils from her and liked them but the cost is prohibitive so I tried some from the store. My bedroom diffuser is on top of an armoire so I can’t see into it. After a couple weeks of using the off brand I picked up the cover and saw some yuck fo I decided to take down the base to just make sure it was clean. OMG, you should have seen the yuck at the bottom. It make me sick to think that for how many nights I was just pouring oil into that thing and pushing the button! No more off brands for me, RMO prices are much better than YL so we are going to try them, And you’re right about the lavender, it doesn’t really smell nice.

Rocky Mountain Oils are amazing. They post their actual chemical data right on the website for every jar of oil. They have very pure, high grade oils and usually offer free shipping. I have ordered a few things from Mountain Rose Herbs before I found RMO, but I have never looked back since.
Hey there, I get where you are coming from, I smell the off smell on some of the oils I have been using, (mlm). I am questioning weather I would like to stay with an mlm or get from RM. I have left all the other mlm I have done, started my own jewelry company and am amazed at how free I am. I am loving it. Now maybe is the time to break from all mlm’s for me. We enjoy oils. I actually just ordered to try them to try, as I do belong to an MLM and usually order through them. I do have a couple problems with your article though. My MLM doesn’t require to become a member and they do direct shipping as well. Please don’t throw all MLM’s under the bus, mine has amazing essential oils.
No, they don’t require it, but the discount is substantial if you get on board with the rest of the reps. The problem I have with all MLMs is that friends who gain their income through an MLM company start seeing you as a sales target vs. an old friend. The cost is substantially inflated as well, which I am sure you already know.
I totally agree Angie. I never see my friends as a sales target if they are interested we can talk if not that is totally fine. Seems to be more of an issue with friends not the company.

Love your information you have posted here. I know exactly what you mean about the smell! I just don’t get it. I currently have DoTERRA, my best friend has Young Living and the oils smell nothing alike. My main reason for switching is the misinformation from DoTERRA. I have a bottle of helichrysm and on the bottle it says dilute 1 drop in 4 oz of water, on the website it says DO NOT INGEST! Well ok then glad I didn’t die all the times I did ingest it. Not to mention I have to pay $25 a year to just be able to buy the oils at wholesale pricing, annoying. I’m currently researching and looking for a good NON mlm company and Rocky Mountain Oils just keeps coming up:-) Absolutely love that they tell you where the oil originates, and source the oil to where the plant is native, I feel that is a huge factor in deciding on an oil. I know YL has their own farms in the US, and I feel your not getting a true oil if they don’t grow where they are native. DoTERRA’s frankincense has 4 different types mixed into one, but your paying for the most expensive type! I have just started my EO journey and after some research decided to start with Edens Garden… voted #1 non MLM company. Very happy so far but I am a newby. I don’t buy into the YL and Doterra purchasing scheme. I see where the support would be advantageous but I’m too cost conscious to pay for all the “middle men”. I also prefer to buy from a company that just produces EO and not make up and vitamins etc. I am impressed with what I read about RMO and plan to try some of their oils. I don’t feel you have to only use one company.

Good to share. Buying oils on amazon is a no no too, Even Rocky mountain, could be diluted. Buy direct. Do your home work there are several companies that sell pure.
Sorry honey, If your lavender now has a sweet smell to it, what did they add to it to get it to smell that way? And how are they distilling it? YL essential oils are all pure without anything added. I get migraine headaches from odors. I have not had one headache from YL oils. I believe it is because they do not add anything to them to make them smell pretty. I am keeping my YL oils. I love them.
Did I say it had a sweet smell. No I did not. I said it was pleasant instead of disgusting. There is a big difference. Since Young Living actually got CAUGHT breaking the law and practicing dishonesty, it is amusing to me to see how many YL groupies are jumping over to this post to defend the purity and perfection of their favorite company. Just to be clear, I did not reference Young Living Lavendar at all.
I got sick and tired of their cracked caps! Every single cap. I have it in an approved zipped oil carrier, and all of them evaporate. I’ve been a customer for over 22 years. Just wasted a whole lot of cash on nothing. Who wants to pay more and get penalized bcuz you don’t spend a certain amount each month? Let’s see, that is almost like forcing u to buy a certain amount or get hosed! Seed to seal. Who’s watching this process? CEO? There is a very big difference in companies when your buying Essential Oils. I will only by the best And for he last three years, after it saved my life from black mold in my house, I have been on Young Living because of the purity, strength and success I have received from using them.

The only people that have mentioned YL & DT or any other mlm or company, have been people from those companies! Amy never mentioned any specific companies in her original posts! The only time she has mentioned them was to respond to those that did to let them know she didn’t. You need to read everything from the beginning if you are going to respond so you don’t make an a@# of yourselves!

I’ve only ever tried oils from PT and one blend from YL. While I’ve looked into RMO, I’ve never bought from them – I may be giving them a try! I’ve had a similar experience with PT’s lavender – the bottle I had before my current one was better in scent, but it had to do with the growing conditions, location of the crop, etc. Lavender is still not my favorite, but I adore their citrus oils, and have multiple blends that I love. Hi, To get rid of warts take Vitamin A pills. It takes a little while for it to work but it does work. I tried everything to get rid of mine even the Dr freezing it off and it didn’t work. I started taking Vitamin A And with in 2 months it was gone and it also got rid of my kids warts as well.
I have had success with oils on several other warts, but not this one. I’ll try that. I have had Doctors try to freeze it off twice.
Apple Cider Vinegar w/ mother. Put on tiny piece of cotton ball, tape it over spot. I left it on for hours at a time, everyday for several days. The wart will start peeling off in layers and turn black. It will also start throbbing. Some can’t take the throbbing; therefore, can’t leave it on for hours on end. The longer you leave it on, the quicker it heals. I tried it out of desperation because nothing else worked. I didn’t really think it would work, but I’m now an ACV believer. Google it!!! Good luck!

My mom was the first to join, and I thought she was crazy going on and on about how “awesome” the oils were. I’d tried essential oils from store before but they were nothing spectacular.
One year I got sick with a cold and I was sick for about a month with it and cold medicine wasn’t working. My mom sent me a small heart container of oil samples and a book to walk me through how to use it. When I started using them I felt like I was getting instant relief!
The oils are made the same way grown and shipped my expert growers from their native homes and I’ve been hooked from then on. I hardly get sick now

RMO is a company I’ve looked at a lot. I just started Young Living with a friend’s help, and while this is my first experience, the oils seem fantastic. There is no obligation to purchase anything, but you do get discounts if you start with the starter kit (they offer an inexpensive one with small samples). You can participate in the monthly rewards, but it’s not a requirement.
My only hang up is how they list things as “therapeutic grade.” While I don’t think their oils aren’t top notch, and they provide plenty of information on it, it just annoys me that they have a basically made up term, it feels deceptive.
Anyways, I was happy to see a post on Rocky Mountain Oils. Because I don’t have obligations to purchase only from Young Living, RMO was on my list to compare pricing with and probably purchase from!
While I appreciate what you’re trying to do, there is so much misinformation here. In fact, RMO is NOT the only company to put a batch number on every bottle, and provide a GCMS test result for that oil. dōTERRA does this as well. BUT there’s so much more than simply that ONE test. Every company (should) provide that test, but dT goes even further by doing 7 additional testings that other companies do not do. They also have all of their oils tested by the most trusted oil testing company in the world APRC (aromatic plant research center). As stated below, YL nor dT require anyone to purchase a set amount of oils per month. I respect anyone who does their research, but please don’t spread false information about other (more reputable) oil companies SIMPLY because they are MLM, and for some reason you have a bad taste in your mouth for an MLM.
IN FACT — I did not state that DoTerra did not do testing. I stated that RMO was the first DIRECT SHIP company to do so. DoTerra is an MLM and while they might allow direct ship purchases now — Here is exactly the reason I do not like MLM oils. Orange Oil from DoTerra WITHOUT buying into the Wholesale MLM part is $14. That same oil from Rocky Mountain Oils is $8.50. Why? Because I do not have to pay for three, four, or five up-lines to make a percentage of the sale on RMO oils. That’s what an MLM does – it drives up the costs. Even with your wholesale discount you pay $11 for that oil. AND just for point of reference since you seem confused and instruct me to do my research, please read my exact words ” Rocky Mountain Oils is the first essential oil direct ship company to include batch numbers on their oils and provide full GC/MS data for each batch?” —- DoTerra is not what I consider a direct ship EO company so your point that they do provide testing data and therefore my information is bad research and misinformation is completely invalid. I was very clear in that sentence that I was not including MLM companies. I didn’t even say that no one else did. I understand that today (nearly two years later) several other direct ship companies have followed the example set by RMO but the point remains that they were the first.

If you have trouble sleeping try cherry juice the real stuff that you have to dilute with water (1 oz of cherry juice to 7 oz of water)
You can find different brands in the natural food section of your grocery store. Cherries help with sleeping ! It works and if you like cherry pie it’s almost similar
I use essential oils as well but the cherries will get you a restful sleep… hope that helps

Be VERY cautious with oils around cats. They don’t metabolize them well and the oils can cause them to become very sick in a short period of time.
The same is true for dogs!!!

There is a lawsuit against Young Living. Just plain ethical facts, I am not judging there quality factor. They promise that they self contain the products from the growing process to making the oils, they stated that is why they refuse to use 3rd party testers. The amount of land they own can not possibly grow the amount of oils they distribute because of their extreme popularity. They buy a percentage of herbs etc from unknown growers. For the law suit they had to have their oils along with several other is the same oil from a competing distributed be tested by a trusted 3rd party. The oils were tested blind as well, meaning the testers didn’t know which oils were from which and the contents were and percentages were exactly the same. So, although they are of good quality they charge extreme prices to pay their unknown growers and still make profit. They also do not pay the female staff the same as their male staff doing exactly the same job. I will admit I am not a professional . Yet I have a fatal genetic disease that mutated my collagen at birth. It of course affects my skin, connective tissue as well as my internal organs. I blamed my disease for all my problems such as hair loss, rashes, nail thinning when I found out that I am allergic to all synthetic fragrances as well. The reason I mention this is to explain my reasoning to move to oils and natural products. Also my condition, Vascular, Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, or VHEDS has an average life span of 48 and I just passed my expiration date…in simple terms. I can not afford to do anymore damage to my body. I was dismayed on the facts I found on YL, I questioned all distributors and ethics. In researching I became frustrated but found schooling on becoming a certified therapist. The courses include learning how to access and verify the oils themselves. They do NOT promote any certain product, they do require you to buy oils and other products in small amounts to actually let us as a group determine the quality of our first purchases. As stated I do not disqualify YL but a company that lies about the origins of products, why they don’t use 3rd party testers and are behind on women’s rights, I personally will not put my life, my children’s lives or the chronically ill people I do this for , on any company I can’t trust. I did learn the whole history of oils, from B.C. to NOW. I will say that perhaps YL started with great intentions. They were truly the first to reconnect with what Egypt and Greece etc founded long ago. They also were the originals in our modern lives to produce and perfect processes. Perhaps they connected with the makers of long ago and have not learned ethical practices or that females are as inteligent and professional as men. I Thank you for recommending the Rm oils and truly look forward to purchase them and make conclusions on performance rather than popularity.
I liked your post. I understand the distaste to MLMs but I’m not sure we can get upset for people making money off of oils we buy. Everything we buy people make money off of. Yes there are some terrible MLM companies but not all of them are. There are terrible big cooperations that we buy stuff from and never question it.
As someone who is about to finish my aromatherapy certification, I agree with the therapeutic grade comment. It’s not so much the it’s not real category as much as the consistency of what a therapeutic grade oil is. You can have an adulterated oil that is allowed to be considered therapeutic grade. Lots of people have terrible reactions to these oils. It’s really frustrating!
I agree! If my friends are making money with oils, why not support them? I do, however, notice a difference between a few RMO and MLM oils, so I have a mix of several brands.

I have done tons of research on essential oils prior to using them and Rocky Mountain oils always came up as the purest company. I found that super interesting. Test were completed on several companies and they tested one of the highest. Great company!
We are with doterrea. We get free shipping and almost once a mounth we get a free bottle of oil some more epensive and some cheap we once got a free bottld worth 90 bucks. Plus all of our bottles have a scaner or website we can go to and it tells us what its made of and what it help with like pain and right on the bottle it tells you if its ment to be took internally or externally.
I personally use doTERRA essential oils. They provide a batch number on the bottle and you can go to sourcetoyou.com and enter the batch number to see all third party testing of that batch. The oils are reasonable priced and there is no monthly requirement for purchase unless you want there to be. Prior to doTERRA I used oils I bought at stores like whole foods, Walmart, target, etc. and you are righ, they all has this funky “after smell”, and my kids hated them!
MLM companies are not bad, but they are a personal preference for some. I tried many brands before settling in with doTERRA, and did a great deal of research beforehand as well.
The legal issues associated with young living were an immediate turn off for me, and the lies associated with their seed to seal and the oil buying practices.

That’s very interesting that doTERRA has batch numbers for testing! So they also disclose the ingredients on the bottles of blends? That is my biggest pet peeve with YL because I can’t glance at the bottle to know what’s in the blend.
I read that PT’s lavender is from Bulgaria. doTerra’s is from France. This is apparently why they smell different. Sourcing is key. Indigenous sourcing always appeals to me best, as long as environmentally responsible. doTerra is supposed to focus on this, but I will say their peppermint is great, but I do like a less-sweet peppermint at times as well… I came across this post because I would like to buy some oils from PT, but am nervous to waste my money. I am nearly out of doTerra dill (which I loved), but they haven’t carried it in over a year and I need another pure source. I have tried eden’s garden, the aura cacia (or something) brand in health food stores, and now brands. All were horrible… thus my fear of trying something other than doTerra… I would be interested to hear from anyone who has used doTerra and then gone to PT or RM and found them to be at least as good. From this post it sounds like PT is good other than the lavender…

I also enjoy using my diffuser in my home but recently learned that some oils can poison our pets. Eucalyptus, Tea Tree oils and others can have dangerous effects specially on cats and birds in your home. No warning information regarding the danger to pets was provided by any of the oil suppliers from whom I have purchased.

Multi-Level-Marketing. It is the term used for “party” type companies like Tupperware, Scentsy, and Mary Kay where you are an independent consultant working on commission in a tiered structure such that the more people you recruit, the more you make because you make a percentage off of the sale of everyone in your “downline”. Sometimes, depending on the management tiers in place, up to five people can make a percentage of a sale. That is why it adds so much to the cost of the goods.
There are HUNDREDS of companies that do essential oils. Please don’t limit yourself to loving one and damning another. There are some great companies and products out there. Always be open to the new.

I appreciate your post about not needing to purchase from a mlm company. I have heard good things about Rocky Mountain oils and when I first was getting into oils I did some research and almost chose rmo. But I decided to go with Edens Garden oils instead. I have not had any issues with the company or any of the oils I have purchased and love the scent of most oils! Some oils I got for their benefits not for frangrence 🙂 I am curious if anyone else uses edens garden oils.

If you’re open to other companies (without compensation but pure love of the Oils) look into Butterfly Express. No mlm. Incredible prices. Down to earth people. LaRee wrote a fantastic book for education. Tons of variety. I’m so glad I got educated about Oils before the big mlm explosion!
I really enjoyed reading this. I started using essential oils with dōTERRA last year and love them. I had been looking for good oils and just couldn’t find any in the shops at reasonable prices with good quality. My sister introduced me and I don’t get too involved except my monthly order. I went straight to the RMO page after reading this, and was disappointed to find that because I’m in Australia, this won’t be an option. The prices are in some cases more expensive than dōTERRA, and with conversions and fees, plus shipping costs it’s not economical for me. But I’m inspired to see if I can find a similar company here for sure!
So disappointed…I’ve been researching EO brands for weeks and finally decided on RMO hands down & my next step was to work out price conversions/shipping to Australia…just not viable unfortunately.

Good for you! I am not sure of RMO oils, but know It takes time and understanding to know what a “quality” essential oil is and what it takes to produce pure oil.
FYI – Young Living Essential Oils ALSO puts their lot information directly on their bottles and their product information is readily available. Young Living has been around for 20 + Years. They also have an Essential Rewards program that is quite nice.
Their blends do not include the ingredients on the bottle. It’s my biggest pet peeve with YL.
I’ve been with YL for a few months and have always been able to find the information of a blend right there on the bottle. Sometimes the blends are located under the flap, so you have to peel back the sticker (kind of like an ibuprofen bottle). All of our oils and blends have the ingredients listed.
I came across your post because I am searching – “why do my essential oils suddenly smell bad?” I have been diffusing a combination of lavender and cedar wood at night for sleep for quite a while and suddenly, I noticed that after running for a bit, the mist would start to smell like mildew or musty … I can’t descibe it, just not good. It happened all at once. I cleaned my diffuser but nothing changed, so I was thinking the oils went “off.” I mostly use NOW brands. Maybe I need to try RMO.
Thank you for this! I have been using YL for a year and just felt like something isn’t right. Been doing some research and found out that they aren’t 100% pure. Apparently there were a few people that challenged them and sent there oils directly from the warehouse to a lab. Long story, but I’m not about to stay with a company that is dishonest! My other concern is do you know where RMO are grown? Are they free of heavy metals? Thank you in advance!

I love my essential oils I haven’t used your brand, but I Only use Dotera. These are 100% pure. I figure if you are going to put something into your body you should use the very best right. Yes they are pricey but they work..
I’m a YL distributor and I am only required to purchase a certain amount of oils monthly if I choose to sell oils. Also, there is no push to buy kits. You can purchase single oils no problem. I have nothing against other companies, I just prefer Young Living because they explain where they get their plants from, how they grow them (no pesticides or anything but oils on the growing plants), and their distillation process. They’re transparent. Also, your chart is inaccurate. I’m not sure when you created the comparison chart but there is actually a product that matches the RMO oils as well..

I was buying from YL with my 50$ minimum a month, I just got so tired I of the prices. I recently bought from RMO and plant therapy and I’m everybit as happy, if not more with their oils. RMO lemongrass is amazing, I don’t know why, but I love it that scent. It is so calming to me, and don’t believe it’s a calming one lol. Plant therapy I’m also happy with too. I’ve been deceived for too long YL is the only one way to go. Also can’t beat the FREE SHIPPING with RMO and PT that’s great, YL shipping is ridiculous.
I Love and Trust YL and also love the perks from the 50 pv a month . Not only that I have been in MLMs for 40 yrs and YL by far is the best at treating their people right. Hi, I am so upset I have bought 2 different organic and good quality Lavander essential oils and when I turn the diffuser on the first 20 minutes smells delicious. But, after then, or after next morning. it stinks! Could it be the diffuser?Me?? I am so shocked! It happens with 2 expensive brands
Why do you fail to state that Plant Therapy supplies their test reports also? They also offer free shipping on every order, even single oils! No kit requirements and much better labeling of oils that are kid safe. Maybe because they aren’t paying you? Just because you don’t “like” the smell doesn’t mean it contains impurities. I’m not a fan of MLM companies either but to bash other independent companies who have been nothing but honest and open seems a bit much just to garner compensation.

I’m just getting started with doterra and you are right they work but don’t smell all that good. The shipping is high and their website hasn’t been all that easy for me to use. wish you had samples to smell.l
So, I did a cost comparative between RMO and my doterra. There is not much of a difference. Some doterra cost a bit more, and some RMO cost more. But since I get big time points, at 30%, from doterra and they are dollar=point, so 10 points equal 10 dollars, whenever I buy an oil or other product, so basiclly I get 30% of each oil. And I get shipping bonuses. I also find that the more costly oils are in a blend with FCO at RMO, and in some cases, you are only getting 10% EO to 90% FCO. So, my MLM oils cost me a whole lot less in the end, than RMO. But RMO have a few oils doterra does have yet, I would definitely consider buying some of there oils.
Yeah. I’ll stick w my young living since I know 100% they are approved go be digested. The whole point in going all natural and organic etc is to do better for my family. I also don’t get forced to buy or sell, but I do get rewarded if do…. you sound like u would do good in mlm companies. Since u r already spreading the word on what you like. If you’re ingesting essential oils (whether the company *says* you can or not), just please be 100% sure that you’re doing it in a safe way, especially if you’re giving it to your family. EOs are incredibly concentrated and can be toxic if taken inappropriately. Why risk that if an herbal tincture or tea will do the job much more safely? More isn’t always best.
Yep. I used to fall for the MLM companies thinking they were the only way to go. I honestly thought all other oils were like comparatively speaking “wal-mart” oils if they were not YL or DoTERRA. Just not as good or pure. Haha. I knew nothing then! I buy from RMO and Florihanna now because I know they are pure. 100%. They back up all their information and most people that have been in the oil game for many many years and written books etc do not use MLM oils. That says something. I am not saying MLM oils are crap but there’s other oils from more trust worthy companies where you are not paying as much.
MLMS (I choose not to be a part of any) aren’t terrible things which should be avoided at all costs. Putting money into the pocket of your community members is a GOOD thing. Every item purchased from every store and online retailer has mark up. I’d rather my dollars go into individual hands than huge companies. Even if that means paying a higher price.

Do you check your batch numbers from RMO’s right when you receive them? Have you noticed the date the oils were tested is always 1-2 years prior. I really want to love RMO but I am so disappointed that many of the citrus oils I ordered are past the 1 year shelf life they have before they are not therapeutic any longer. Oils are still good and smell okay but I am not buying them to just smell good. If they have already lost their therapeutic value when I buy and receive them than its pointless to have them. It wasn’t just one bottle either. I ordered 8 different oils and they were all bottled in either 2016 or feb/march/april of 2017.

I love my MLM company, the only requirement they have is a 50 pv purchase a year to stay active . If you are using oils that is not unreasonable. We also have a Seed To Seal process, that means we can be assured of where our oils come from , how they are planted , and how they are distilled. We can also be a part of all this process, because we own the farms and hold our partner farms to the same fire. We have numbers on the bottle that can go back to the very seed. I use RMO also and LOVE them! I’ve tried a few others and did not realize how important it is to get good quality oils. As you stated, they have free shipping and I love that. I also love their points system. The more you buy the more you save in the long run. They also have lots of sales. I try and pick up as many as I can during the sales. My boyfriend and I are around lots of little kids several times a week because he teaches karate classes. During flu season the kids were dropping like flies and I was so worried we were going to get sick. The very day we started to get feverish the flu time oils arrived at our house. I immediately put it on both of us (bottoms of our feet with coconut oil) and by the next day we were both feeling 90% better and by day 3 we were FINE. Everyone else was still suffering. I also use the immune strength to help keep us healthy.

I’m guessing you mean beaucoup – a French word for many, a lot, or an abundance of. Since I have no up-line and the commission I am paid is also comparatively small – you don’t have to worry about a 30% – 50% markup going to commissions above and beyond profits when you purchase from Rocky Mountain Oils.
Ok. Wow. I’m in the same boat!!! They smell funky!! Looks like we may have used the same company (from the photo). Why do you think they’re funky? I mean- I agree that they are- but what do you think the reason is? I’m excited to try the new one you mentioned because I’m just not fond of MLM’s. Why such a generalization you ask? Because they make you (as a seller or rep) completely closed minded. You drink the company koolaid if you want to succeed. Kool aid is not good for anyone.
Anyway, I use oils in my work, and like you said, the orange/ lemon variety are always nice, but the lavender and, my favorite: veviter come in funky.
One blend was so atrocious my husband and i got the giggles when we were trying to sleep. It was locker room meets Fritos. Barf!

I realize this post is from two years ago but on the comparison chart from RMO there are oils that should be listed from doTERRA. And thru doTERRA you do pay shipping but you get it all a back in points toward future purchase. I cannot compare smells and potency because I have never tried RMO. Their are no required memberships-unless you want to save on your purchases. You can pay 35$ a year to get 25% off retail prices. And receive a free 15 ml bottle of peppermint when you sign up. Just a thought. Not watered down or axtra ingredients added. Very potent.
That is the whole point that I tried to make in response someone else’s comment, that membership is required in order to get the lowest price. RMO does not have any membership requirements to get the lowest price and RMO prices are better than DoTerra.Thank you for actually being honest and admitting this.
I agree completely. I used to use YL myself and just wasn’t impressed and used them for 4 years. I now purchase them from Melaleuca for half the price and larger bottles and they are so much better than what I was getting from YL.

I love RMO too. One thing that confuses me. I was first introduced to this company by someone I knew who really researched non-mlm oil companies. She told me about “Native American Nutritionals”. I ordered from them and liked them a lot. But then I started getting duplicate emails with RMO and NAN. And their bottles would sometimes come and some said one name some said the other. Maybe it’s the brand of oils. Maybe synthetic! I have many Doterra oils and never had an issue with most smells. Some are kind of different but I think it’s just the because of the flowers used!
I had bad reactions when I used doterra oils. The smells alone gave me a terrible headache and literally made me sick to my stomach just from the smell.

I use Young Living oils but I absolutely do agree that most of them have an odd smell that turns me off.. My husband is totally turned off by the smells. I’ve tried mixing lemon with the least pleasant smelling oils because they’re supposed to be helpful for various ailments, at the suggestion of my rep (dear niece). Not good enough. I tried a few Rocky Mountain oils and they are much more pleasant smelling right off the bat. I feel like I shouldn’t have to keep mixing my oils to make them less undesirable no matter what promises are made about their efficacy for various problems. And I like very much what I’ve read about the Rocky Mountain company. And there are no limits to certain purchases like in Young Living (only allowed to purchase one a month of certain oils.) I feel badly because I wanted to support my niece in her business so I joined Essential Rewards ($50 a month purchase required). There’s only so much lemon and peppermint I can order!
I am confused? I have been bouncing between the YL and RMO site and the prices are pretty close in price. So no real savings. Plants smells vary from plant to plant. YL does have a strong fragrance of their blends but Basil is basil and Rosemary is Rosemary and Lavender is dependent on the type of plant. You should be really concerned with the fact that it gives the desired effect. It is the effect you want to look at more so than the smell. If you are applying these to your skin do you feel an effect? Not just smell. Yes smell is important but effect is more important. When you use an herbal tincture they don’t always taste great but they have a therapeutic effect so we use them. So what I am looking for is do they re act the same side by side? Can anyone tell me this? I don’t care about the smell, I need the effect.

The country of origin does make a diff in the smell and the thereupeudic properties. Lavendula angustifolia country of origin comes from Bulgaria, Greece, France and Spain. PT lavendula x intermediate country of origin is France…..
Also, I don’t mean to be rude or ugly and completely understand not recommending YL or DT. But ordering from a MLM company is not evil. I sell Plexus and it’s top quality. I used to be anti-mlm bc of brands like DT or YL and their unsafe practices/teachings, huge mark up and blind testing showed their oils were adultered….
The rep/ambassador of the MLM company making a small profit isn’t evil either. After all, your doing the same by using affiliated links and no one classifies that as unfair. MLM companies do allow SAHM to bring in an income without leaving the house. The price markup is no diff than what the local business down the street does.

They only carry 10 oils that are certified organic and they are more expensive than other high quality essential oil companies. Non-organic faming practices are extremely harmful to the environment and because of the large volume of plant material used to make a small amount of essential oil, choosing non-organic essential oils is a bad idea. I choose to support companies that value pesticide free growing practices —it’s better for my health, the health of the growers/farmers and the environment. Luckily, there are a number of essential oil companies that offer a full range of high quality, organic essential oils complete with GC/MS test results.

I have been a massage therapist for over 30 years and originally was convinced that the very best oils were Young Living. I am not saying that they are not excellent oils, I just have found that there are other excellent oils out there too. What I wanted to comment on though specifically is lavender oil. In taking a course in clinical aromatherapy, I learned that the best lavender oil to use for relaxation and sleep is lavandula augustafolia. Some lavender oil such as Spike has the opposite effect and more than a few drops of lavender can also have a stimulating effect. This I learned to be true when I used to rub it all over my toddler grandson’s feet and wondered why he was so hyper.
I am a fitness freak!! at age 60 years old I am a long distance Cyclist and swim laps. I am thin and fit! Vanity is Not my name. Caring for my inner and Outter body is. I Soak in Baby oil twice (2) times daily for at least 10 minutes. I am a firm believer, the baby oil keeps my body (legs and arms) supple without NO wrinkles.. So at my age I am able to wear short-shorts and bikini. Without wrinkles.., For a 60 year old that’s good!! I came across your advertisement and now want to learn more about you and your products.. I’m sorry about the oils you were using. Now I’m sorry about the oils you’re using now. Those still have a lot of chemicals in them. That’s one reason why you can buy them like that. You get what you pay for. I have to tell you young living is the number one oil company in the world. They absolutely do not have any chemicals in them. They are seed to seal. It is a promise and guarantee. So I’m not trying to be rude. Every one has their preference.
There are no extra chemicals that don’t naturally occur in the process of creating essential oils in Rocky Mountain Oils, just as what you have in Young Living Oils. You have been mis-informed because Young Living is really good at creating passionate disciples who believe whatever they are told.
Would this company sell wholesale? We own a a custom Jewelry business and have Diffuser jewelry and are looking to purchase essential oils so we can sell with the pieces? Please let me know if this His is something they do?
I love Rocky Mountain essential oils! These are the only ones I have in my case. I love the fact that we get oil’ty rewards also!
I am a Plant Therapy customer and their EO’s also have lot #’s stamped on the bottles to check the testing results of each EO. Their testing results are amazing and each batch of oils are tested twice. One specific person who tests Plant Therapy’s quality is world renowned Robert Tesserand. Plant Therapy also has free shipping. They don’t have a membership program and they aren’t an mlm. You want to buy something, you just buy. It’s that simple. They also have this amazing rewards program, called perqs points. For every 100 points collected you get $1. I just spent $40 of free money (perqs points) to buy some oils. Again, there is no sign up fee or membership. They really do have great oils and Robert Tesserand to back them up.
I will not bash any company but like to share my experience. I too did not orginally want to join an MLM and searched for “best” alternative and found RMO. Used their oils for past 2 years. Did feel it helped my families immune system. Then few months ago begrudingly went to another doterra presentation and realized there are no minimum purchases or kits I had to buy, I could buy myself online just as I was doing through RMO and prices were about the same or better with incentives through doTerra. After using for few months I have had amazing therapeutic results I never received using other oils. My depression and my sons sensory struggles and anxiety has improved greatly; and I am learning so much more through my team and education and support. Even compared DT lavender and lemon and RMO lav and lemon with drop on white paper. DoTerra evaporated completely, RMO left an oil mark- a sign of diluted oil. I know I read this article a couple of years back when I was looking for a blend to help with my migraines. I went to RMO’s website and saw that they had a “migraine relief” blend. I ordered it and was blown away at how well it worked. I have been using that blend for almost 3 years, and will not change. I have used YL, doTerra, Plant Therapy, and Edens Garden oils, but Rocky Mountain is my go too every time. Thank you for writing this article and introducing me to Rocky Mountain OIls.

Each there own. But please don’t waste precious oils. If you don’t want your Plant Therapy oils don’t through them away. I will glassing pay shipping to take them off you hands. I love Plant Therapy oils and the company.
Both are great companies . Aroma is a very personal ‘thing’. The molecular chemistry within an oil is what dictates aroma and therapeutic uses. In the case of Lavender, the chemistry is actually a bit better in PT’s, with the percentages of the linalyl acetate and linalool being higher. Price is also better. Your article ds not mention chemistry of oils so was it smell alone that prompted this article? Unless you are a perfumer, smelling an oil cannot dictate the quality within the oil. Oil the GC/MS report will show that. I’d like to note it is always good to have more than one company. Not one company carriers every oil.
However, there is a valid point that you haven’t mentioned: are the oils pure? I was recently curious about the Rocky Mountain oils, so I contacted the company to ask a few questions. The rep with whom I spoke admitted to me that some of their oils are diluted with carriers. And their prices aren’t much less expensive than some other essential oil companies that operate on an MLM system. So if I don’t know when an oil is diluted, or by what amount, I can’t be confident of the value of this product. Sorry, it’s just that I believe that you should actually receive what you think you are purchasing.
They have the fractionated coconut oil listed in the ingredients for their diluted blends. I appreciate that they offer diluted blends because I can’t afford the price for the single bottles of some of the oils because they are so expensive. Like one of my blends that contains rose.
By diluting a blend, they can offer more blends that are affordable. They do say somewhere how much the blend is diluted. They also have many blends that are undiluted, and I believe all their single oils are.
is one of those brands doTerra? I just figured I wasn’t a fragrance person because the headache remedy gave me a massive headache mostly because I couldn’t stand the smell. I also tried an age spot blend, but it gave me a headache and I couldn’t sleep
Yes! YL Lavender gave me a terrible head ache! And YL and Doterra are so expensive! I’m going grocery to look into Rocky Mountain!
DōTERRA has always put batch numbers on their oils so you know exactly when and where it was sourced. They are global leaders in purity

Young Living grows their own plants & they go from seed to oils. Best essential oils I’ve ever tried. Smells are wonderful & the way they work is amazing!
Aromatics International is a fabulous oils supplier, providing all reports. Highly recommend. I purchase oils from 3 companies including Mountain Rose Herbs and Young Living.
I think you made a wise decision
I put a monthly order from YL and since I have been a member for 21 months I get a 20% reward every time I order. Since I can not use fragrances and other toxic chemicals that manufacturers add into their different products, I need to be able to trust my essential oils. Being a member of YL we are encouraged to visit the farms and its distillery and there, my friend, I know I can trust YL company.
And if I can help out a home school mom or a stay at home mom or just someone that just enjoy an unadulterated essential oil but can not afford it then I’m glad to help out a small business individual than those big companies that has toxic chemicals in their oils.
So if your main purpose of using essential oil is for health support then you make sure you can trust your company. Otherwise just buy a grocery brand oils.
Try Lisse Essential Oils. They can provide everything outlined above, and their prices are better.
So far RMO are my faves too! I do love YL, but can not afford them!
If you get pure E.O. there is no “chemical makeup”. No dilution. Just 100% pure E.O. My company even uses steam distillation to ensure nothing else is in their oils.

That’s great! Glad you found a product you love. Just wanted to put out that Doterra includes oil numbers with the purity tests done on the oils and the links to see all the data. They have always done so. You get the direct link with your confirmation email
I find it interesting that if people click and order RMO from this post you make a commission- sort of like MLM people make a commission isn’t it?! You aren’t doing this PR for them not to get paid!
a single commission with no up-line is NOTHING like a multi-level marketing company where commission after commission is added and the prices are jacked up. I don’t have five middle men. And I’ve seen the commission structure for Young Living. I should post the picture of it to this group, but I didn’t write this post to bash MLM companies, in spite of what the commenters all seem to think.
Although it is great that you found a company that you like better, I am not sure I feel confident that Rocky Mountain is any worse Ron better than the other brands. And I say this specifically because you receive a commission off this. I don’t use any of the three brands you mentioned so it is not like I am partial to Young Living or Do Terra.
Have you tried Doterra essential oils? They source their oils from 46 different lands and have 3rd party independent testing. The testing companies make the test results public using a serial number on the bottom of every bottle. The oils come from countries where the oil sourced plants are known to be the best. One thing I found important in the search for oils is that if the boxes says Pure Essential oil and you turn it over and read Warning not for internal use. It has a lot of junk in it. Doterra doesn’t junk up their oils.
U don’t know much about oils.. 3/4 of them are fake .. synthetic not real.. doTERRA is the Best handS down.. no other company will ever compare… they are the biggest .. source only the very best and third party tested.. cptg. Certified a bump up from organic..can trace every bottle to it’s original lot. Only harvest from the best places on earth.. and only when at it’s peak… these people who harvest it.. are paid a regular pay check even when not in season.. they are supported by doTERRA for anything they need with our healing hand project.. look it up and learn more! Be careful what you put on your body! Good luck to you!
I get my oils from YL and 50 minimum is a lot to people who do not have it. With shipping, shipping tax which I have never paid on anything else ever , and taxes 70 something a month is a lot. I love their oils but I know they have other oils out there that are better priced. YL is overpriced. No you are not forced to buy anything . They are overpriced and that’s why I’ll be looking elsewhere.
I loved your blog. I am 55 and have always been interested in eos . Now they are everywhere and I can finally make my own items. I was blessed with a good skin gene pool, and a mom that always stressed to take care of your skin. I don’t like the MLM programs either not something I could afford as a single mom of 4 or now on SSI. You have saved me s fortune with this article. I love Rosehip oil and Lavender like you a smell in different brands some more than others. I still don’t know what quality Rosehip oil should smell like. My son bought me some Rosehip oil off of Amazon that I had never tried and it smells nutty no hint of rose st all. It works great on my skin but the smell bothers me. I added lavender and Frankensis to take it away. The oils I have purchased in the past has a mild scent of rose, not as strong as rosewater but noticeable. I loved the links to Rockey Mountin links and will be dumping my EO list from Amazon for your option. Before I throw out the 4oz bottle of oil my son so graciously bought, can you tell me what quality Rosehip should or shouldn’t smell like? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again for your post. Buying oils on Amazon is very risky!! It is very easy to adulterate(dilute, add synthetic chemicals)a bottle of oil put a new lid back on and sell. Make sure you know our company and buy direct!!!
Can you use Rocky Mountain in your food, as well as a diffuser or put it in a capsule or cook with it. I’m new to Young Living but have been enjoying mine for this reason.
This was very interesting, thank you. I had no idea. I have been a long time doTerra user because I have had results with certain blends etc. for many years. Have recently stopped my usage with them because I didn’t feel the need each month to have oils unused etc. or trying to sell someone else on the product or company. I will definitely be looking onto this.
I have used Rocky Mountain oils for about 3 years and love them. H ave never had a problem. They even replace a order when it was lost in the mail at no charge. Customer service is great.
My company that I love provides batch numbers as well to show scientific studies that were done for that batch… just saying yours is not the only one doing this. Are your oils clinical grade?
I’m a huge RMO fan and have been for some time. However, I have to say the title of your blog is incredibly misleading.
Reading all the comments have been interesting, but this is my opinion. I probably have 150 bottles of YLO. I stopped buying from them almost a year ago now and did my research and have been buying RMO’s since. I was a distributor only and I also was a rewards member. I religiously bought every month to get my free oils. I sometimes spent over 300.00 a month, which is absolutely crazy cause many of those freebies I don’t really even use. I did feel pressured at times from my sponsors. Some are more aggressive because they want to grow, and yes there is a 50.00 cap plus to get the 6.99 shipping rates you have to be a rewards member. There is lots of gimmicks.
In saying all that I do believe in their quality, but I also upon my research believe in the RMO purity and quality. So if we are to weigh back to back I choose no pressure and ordering as little or as much as I want. They have some wonderful perks and no one bothers you. I had a few favorites as in YLO Thieves, but I’ve now become just as found of my Immune Strength from RMO. I love that I can ask the RMO people what is comparable to a certain YLO I use to use, and they tell me. I love you can check the batch numbers out.
For me it’s a better option. I never liked multi level companies. Today I needed my frankincense so I ordered my one bottle and that’s all. YLO frankincense (15 ml) is priced wholesale (if your a distributor) at $75.50. $99.34 if your not. (Retail) RMO Frankincese $59.95. Plain and simple. Same price for one and all. You choose.
Same purity and quality but better prices and no multi level. For me I choose Rocky Mountain Oils!
Thank you for being honest about all the gimmicks and pressure in multi level marketing and specifically with YL. I think you might be the first person with firsthand experience as a Young Living Distributor who was willing to admit that.
it’s a shame you used Plant Therapy oils in your photo since they are an excellent company that has free shipping, you can buy single oils, has excellent quality with no fillers, and a total commitment to education with excellent blogs and a customer service team that is incredibly helpful.
Three, 100% tomahawk heartedly. However, young living is coming out with the statement that none of the EO companies will let people tour their farms some because they don’t own them and some for other reasons. Where does Rocky Mountain get there oil’s from? I just want to come back for these people. LOL
Ask them which farms they can tour. Ask them if they realize that almost all of the best EO companies share sources and buy from the same farms. Ask them if lavender is indigenous to Utah.

I did the same thing, but I went with Eden’s Garden Essential Oils. They don’t have free shipping, but it’s minimal. They’ve been proven 100% and their prices are great. Their website has reviews from real people and what they use each oil for and they’re a Christian owned company.
I have been interested in essential oils for awhile. I have used some in an infuser but I know nothing about them. Where would you suggest good information for essentials and how to use them
Be Young Total Health would be the best place to go. They have Pure oils and that is not deiuted in a base and the other compnys that say they are pure.
I have been a die hard YL user for years, and dabble a bit with DoTerra. But after reading up on RMO I am giving them a try. I am always concerned about the purity of them.
I love this article and will probably be purchasing Rocky Mountain Oils, but I do want to point out that anything you purchase in a grocery store, or any store, is the result of multi-level marketing. When you look at all the levels of people that receive a portion of the money paid for that product, you have first of all the store. Don’t forget transportation. That truck got loaded somewhere so you better include the people that did the loading. And was the product warehoused for a bit after manufacturing? The warehouse owner gets a piece of the profit. Then you get to the manufacturing company itself which probable has a chart with the CEO at the top and many factory workers at the bottom, that looks just like a mlm chart. And if they outsource marketing, testing, or any other process, those come out of the profits also. MLM just allows ordinary people to be a part of the profit stream, while the large manufacturers want to close the profit funnel to the public (unless you are a stock holder). MLM, Corporation. Same game, different name.

Thank you so much for posting this! I bought RMO oils and then wanted to try YL oils just because you always hear so much about them. But something in me, even after I got YL oils, just felt weird about the whole MLM structure of the company. I felt really discouraged about oils after buying from YL and then doing more research on the company as a whole. This post reminded me just how great RMO oils are and that I don’t have to lose hope in oils altogether 🙂
I also had dabbled in EOs over the years, but couldn’t really love them. Then last year I ordered from RMOs and I love all of them. Now I actually like the way they make my cabinet smell!
I just ordered orange blossom from Columbia Fragrance Company in Florida. It is amazing. It brings back memories of my 1970’s family trip to Florida.

I have used their oils and agree that are very nice. I make my own as much as possible. Grow my own lavender and steam distill the oils. I would love for you to try my aromatherapy mask. It uses essential oils. It is a healing spa treatment.

We threw away our Young Living oils, and bought REVIVE. It’s the same set up and they’re completely transparent with their testing through Dr. Pappas. They post all reports, etc. I feel so much better about using these in my home and not only that, they’re much cheaper!!
RMO has been my oils of choice since I first started using them under the Native American name! They are the best and I’ve never been disappointed!

Hello Amy, I hope you are well. I live in Australia and I am currently in the market for good quality EO. So i will will be trying RM based on your personal use and vie views. I would also like to add that everything you are saying about YL company is true. I actually attended a YL stand at an Expo, where you fill out a questionnaire on any aches and pains etc. Then you have a sit down with their consultant who makes some recommendations of which products are suitable for you. They are very pushy, she took all my personal details, and started smsing on weekly basis too. It’s true you have to be a member to purchase their product, and their start up kits range from$ 100 upwards $400. Very expensive, She also claimed that they have their own farms where they grow and source their oils. The reason why i came across this article was because the samples YL I was given did not last on the skin at all. They were for stress and breath. There wasn’t enough sample to try it in my diffuser and I’m not prepared to spend hundreds on such products that have proven ineffective. I will try Ricky mountain instead, if they ship to Australia.

Wow! Some people are so brainwashed! I’m a YL customer & have to spend $50 a month to get “the discount”. I’ve been buying RMO’s to see how they compare, I love them. The only reason I’m still with YL is the person I signed up with is new. Probably in a couple months I will cancel my membership. I’ve already came across a couple people who have lied just to get new customers, and to “take up” for how YL oils are “the best 100% pure EO’s”…NOT GOOD! That just rubbed me the wrong way. I’ll be 100% RMO’s soon. To heck with YL and the brainwashing!

I totally agree with you when it comes to the Lavender EO. I have used the popular brand for years, but steered clear of their Lavender. I still do!! I purchased from RMO a little over a month ago. Don’t ask me why I did it, but, I ordered their Organic Lavender. Oh my, I am absolutely shocked by the difference in the smell. I love it!! I can say it is now one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Another favorite is their Migraine Support. Helps a lot.
