Using Toys to Teach – Playing to Learn

by Amy Blevins 1 Comment

I like to find ways of using toys to teach my kids something, because they spend way more time playing with their toys than they spend doing classwork. Especially LEGO®. I know my unschooling friends will jump right in and reassure me that they keep on learning while they play. What I like to do is bring the LEGOs into our classwork to illustrate problems. For instance, recently my six-year-old Continue Reading >>

Best Books for Moms: Encouragement and Inspiration

by Amy Blevins Leave a comment

It is really, really hard to choose my favorite book. So many amazing books have literally changed my perspective, challenged my thinking, and become a catalyst for change. Three stand out: A Chance to Die by Elisabeth Elliot, Under the Overpass by Mike Yankovski and Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss. Of these three of the best books for moms, today I would choose Stepping Heavenward as my Continue Reading >>

Creative Learning in the Kitchen - a list of 10 fabulous ideas for learning without cooking!

So coming up Continue Reading >>

The Day My Husband Gave Me A Cowbell

The Day My Husband Gave me A Cowbell

One year among my Christmas presents, I found socks, and jewelry, and other random stuff. And a big, red cowbell. I was a little bit bewildered, to say the least. I made a big deal of it as moms will do, set it aside, and wondered. Why a cowbell? I knew my husband had come up with the idea for the child who picked this out. What in the world was he thinking to give me a cowbell? Then he Continue Reading >>

Dinosaurs on the Move - illustrated cut out dinosaur

Your little boys and big boys and girls all love dinosaurs - so it's time to start finding the best dinosaur books ever and adding them to your library right? For our family, that means finding dinosaur books with a biblical understanding of creation or no reference to evolution or creation at all, so that book can be used in a way that complements our worldview. Encouraging Children to be Helpful

by Amy Blevins 1 Comment

Dad helping at the beach.

As Christians, we have a responsibility to be helping hands -- at home, at church, and in our community. And we have a responsibility to teach our children how to be happy helpers. So how exactly does one go about encouraging children to be helpful? I haven't figured it out exactly, but I think it comes through modeling. Teaching by example. If I am doing my best every day to be a helpmeet to Continue Reading >>
