My kids like the Star Wars movies. That’s probably an understatement. It all started with my husband, and though I’m a bit galaxy-challenged myself, I still like to surprise my kids with crazy Star Wars Party ideas, especially on May the 4th Be With You and during all of the Star Wars birthday parties we seem to have. For the ultimate fan in the younger set, these DIY kids light sabers are the perfect party activity.
Star Wars Birthday Party Ideas
I cannot even tell you how many times one of my children has decided they want a Star Wars themed birthday party and, usually, they tell me at the very last minute possible. The good news is, I can keep the decorations from year to year and almost guarantee we will use them again. Of all the party themes, this is the one we’ve repeated over and over.
The make-your-own light saber station is a perfect addition to the kids’ party. Follow the directions at the end of this post for a fun way to make DIY Kids Light Sabers: Your guests will love getting to make a light saber that glows in the dark! Here are few other Star Wars party ideas:
- Wookie Cookies.
- A Death Star Piñata.
- Jedi Robes for wearing.
- Suggest guests Come as favorite Star Wars Characters.
- Yoda, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Darth Vader Costumes can be on hand for those without their own.
- Jedi Training Sessions.
- Grab Free Printables like these Star Wars coloring pages.
The process to make your own light saber is super simple, involves blowing lots of bubbles for fun first, and comes together quickly enough to make the perfect party activity for little kids. And just in time for some seriously fun Star Wars battle play those kids will be talking about for weeks! Of course, if your kids don’t want to blow 5000 bubbles you can always have a back up container to save all that bubble juice!
Supplies to Make Kids Light Sabers
Here’s what you need to set up your Make-Your-Own Light Saber Station for the next Star Wars party at your house.
- Bubbles Tubes. Empty.
- Glow Sticks. Get the necklaces or thicker tubes but make sure they will fit in the bubble tubes.
- Kid-safe scissors. For cutting duct tape strips.
- Sharpies. Used to decorate the handle or write a child’s name on the handle.
- Shiny Silver Duct Tape. To create the handle.
This is a cheap party activity in addition to being fabulous. A table and sign will take it over the top.
Tips to Make the Best Kids Light Sabers at Your Next Star Wars Party
- Make sure the handle is clean and dry before you apply your tape! If it has any residual bubble solution on it, it won’t stick as well.
- Have some fun with the texture of the handle! You can roll up some tape in strips, and place it in layers to add dimension and unique character!
- You could add the glow stick while there is still solution in it, but be careful and make sure the necklace is not cracked when bending into position.
- For an extra bright light, choose a thicker glow pendant or add an extra necklace.
- Duct tape can be tricky for some kids, so you might want to assign a parent to hover nearby, but for the most part, let the kids do this themselves!
Print copies of the directions to have on hand at the party – I’m guessing a few parents will ask for copies to have make-your-own light saber stations at their next Star Wars party. It’s a cheap, easy, and fun activity kids will love. Make sure you take lots and lots of pictures and tag me on Instagram on the big day! Are your older kids having a Star Wars celebration?
